Koh Rong features 43 km of beaches edged by coral reefs and backed by forested hills rising to about 320 m. The island’s biodiversity includes tropical hardwoods, coral gardens, and marine life like parrotfish and seahorses.
Tourism and activities
Tourism ranges from simple bamboo bungalows to upscale resorts such as Song Saa Private Island nearby. Visitors enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, jungle treks, and diving courses at Koh Rong Dive Center. A celebrated nighttime experience is swimming among bioluminescent plankton visible on dark, moonless evenings. Police Beach and Koh Touch Village host periodic full-moon parties, while quieter areas like Lonely Beach cater to travelers seeking seclusion.
Infrastructure and access

There are few paved roads; transportation is mostly by boat or footpaths linking beaches and villages. Ferries from Sihanoukville—operated by Buva Sea, GTVC Speedboat, and others—run several times daily. Electricity is supplied by local generators, and internet coverage is limited but improving. A small airport project has been proposed to serve future tourism growth.
Climate and best time to visit
Koh Rong has a tropical monsoon climate (Am type), with a dry season from November to May offering sunny skies and calm seas ideal for beach and diving activities. The rainy season, June to October, brings heavy showers and rougher seas but a lush green landscape.
