Cambodia and Thailand Hold Joint Military Border Meeting to Advance Ceasefire Implementation

Cambodian Military Region 4 and Thailand’s 2nd Army Area convened a Special Regional Border Committee (RBC) Joint Secretariat Meeting this morning at the O’Smach border checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province, strengthening ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability along the shared frontier.

The meeting served as a preparatory session ahead of the Special Cambodia–Thailand RBC meeting, focusing on operational coordination, confidence-building, and security cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Commitment to Peace and De-escalation

The Cambodian delegation was led by Brigadier General Nit Narong, Deputy Chief of Staff of Military Region 4, while the Thai delegation was headed by Brigadier General Kamphaknak Vapansoo, Chief of Staff of the 2nd Army Area. The session was also attended by representatives of the ASEAN Observer Teams (AOT) from both sides, who are tasked with monitoring and verifying the full and effective implementation of the bilateral ceasefire.

According to Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, the joint meeting discussed the gradual and phased removal of heavy weapons from border areas. This process will be carried out under AOT supervision, ensuring transparency and adherence to prior commitments made by both governments.

Implementing the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration

Both delegations reaffirmed their resolve to uphold the principles outlined in the Joint Declaration between Cambodia and Thailand, signed in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, 2025, as well as the agreements reached during the Second Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) held in Malaysia on October 23, 2025.

Goodwill Measures and Continued Progress

In a notable gesture of goodwill following the Joint Declaration, both sides initiated the first phase of weapon withdrawal on the night of October 26, 2025, each removing two armored vehicles from the contested border zone and returning them to their original positions.

Officials from both military regions described the meeting as a productive and forward-looking dialogue, paving the way for continued de-escalation and constructive outcomes at the upcoming Special RBC Meeting scheduled for later this afternoon.

The Special Cambodia–Thailand RBC Joint Secretariat Meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about future cooperation and confidence that sustained communication would help maintain long-term border peace.
