Speaking at a high-level meeting for ministers focused on delivering the Global Cooling Pledge, Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Cambodia’s Minister of Environment, informed the world that Cambodia has adopted a comprehensive National Cooling Action Plan. This plan aims to address the need for cooling across various sectors, including buildings, the cold chain for food production, and healthcare facilities.
The Core Strategy
Dr. Eang Sophalleth explained that the main focus of this National Cooling Action Plan is the use of passive cooling strategies. This approach means they look to reduce the need for heating and cooling through smart architectural design first, before relying on mechanical systems like air conditioners.
Sharing Experience and Seeking Partnership
The Environment Minister stated that in Cambodia, passive cooling is already helping to protect communities during rising heat waves. It helps ease the strain on the national power system and avoids unnecessary energy use.
He highlighted that Cambodia is ready to share its laws, action plans, and experience with others. Furthermore, Cambodia welcomes deeper technical and financial partnerships to speed up the use of passive cooling across the ASEAN region and the world.
About the Global Pledge
It is worth noting that the High-Level Cooling Ministerial Roundtable is an annual event held during the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COPs). Its goal is to assess countries’ commitments to implementing passive cooling actions to help collectively reduce the growth of global greenhouse gases by at least 68% by 2050.
