PHNOM PENH – Cambodia’s tourism sector has hit a significant milestone, recording 1.1 million Chinese tourist arrivals in the first 11 months of 2025. This represents a staggering 43.5% year-on-year increase, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Tourism.
Chinese visitors now account for 21% of the total 5.17 million international arrivals this year. While Vietnam remains the top source market, China has firmly secured the second position, leapfrogging other regional competitors.
Why the Surge? Strategic Connectivity and Marketing
Industry experts attribute this growth to a combination of “high-touch” diplomacy and improved logistics:
- Expanded Flight Routes: The launch of new direct flights, such as the Siem Reap–Shenzhen route in July 2025, has made travel more accessible for China’s rising middle class.
- Cambodia-China Year of Tourism 2025: This year-long promotional campaign has successfully rebranded Cambodia as a “safe and premium” destination for Chinese holidaymakers.
- Visa Facilitation: Trial visa exemptions and the streamlined E-Arrival Card have significantly reduced friction at entry points.
The Economic Impact: Offsetting Regional Slumps
The rise in Chinese arrivals comes at a critical time. While land-based tourism from Thailand and Vietnam has seen a dip due to regional tensions, the 20% growth in air-connected tourism—driven largely by China—is providing a vital lifeline to Cambodia’s economy.
Thong Mengdavid, from the China-ASEAN Studies Center, notes: “Chinese tourist arrivals are expected to continue rising steadily, supported by China’s outbound recovery and Cambodia’s renewed push to diversify its tourism markets.”
