France Backs Peaceful Resolution to Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute

PHNOM PENH — France is closely monitoring the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute and has voiced its support for a peaceful resolution achieved through bilateral mechanisms, the ASEAN framework, and adherence to international law.

This stance was conveyed by H.E. Olivier Richard, the newly appointed French Ambassador to Cambodia, during a courtesy call on Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly (NA), at the NA Palace this morning.

NA President Samdech Khuon Sudary emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to living peacefully with its neighbours and transforming its borders into zones of friendship, cooperation, and development. She firmly reaffirmed Cambodia’s determination to resolve the border issue with Thailand patiently and peacefully, prioritizing the safeguard of peace and the safety of the Cambodian people.

“Cambodia has already endured wars and does not want its citizens to suffer again,” Samdech Khuon Sudary stressed, noting that Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has consistently conveyed this position to French President H.E. Emmanuel Macron and other international partners.

While thanking France for its support of the existing ceasefire, the NA President expressed deep concern over the ceasefire’s fragility, citing repeated violations by the Thai side, including encroachments on Cambodian sovereignty and actions affecting innocent civilians. She further noted that the long-standing dispute persists because Thailand continues to rely on a unilaterally drawn map, rejects the internationally recognized map prepared by the Franco-Siamese Mixed Commission, and fails to uphold the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding.
