Cambodia and Singapore Target $10 Billion Trade Milestone as Envoy Concludes Mission

Acting Head of State Hun Sen calls for doubling trade with Singapore to $10 billion during a farewell visit with Ambassador Teo Lay Cheng at the Solidarity Palace.

PHNOM PENH: In a high-level diplomatic farewell, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State and President of the Senate, set an ambitious new target for Cambodia-Singapore economic relations. During a meeting on the morning of March 4, 2026, Samdech Techo expressed his vision to double bilateral trade from its current $5 billion to $10 billion in the coming years.

A Landmark Farewell at Solidarity Palace

The remarks were made as Samdech Techo Hun Sen received a farewell visit from H.E. Ms. Teo Lay Cheng, the outgoing Ambassador of Singapore to Cambodia. According to H.E. Chea Thyrith, Spokesperson of the Senate, the meeting served as both a reflection on five years of successful diplomacy and a roadmap for future strategic growth.

To honor her significant contributions to the bilateral relationship, Samdech Techo conferred upon Ambassador Teo the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sahametrei, the highest honor awarded to foreigners for distinguished service to the King and the people of Cambodia.

Doubling Down on Economic Synergy

The proposed $10 billion trade target reflects a rapid acceleration in commerce between the two ASEAN neighbors. Key highlights from the discussion included:

  • Trade Resilience: Bilateral trade surged by nearly 90% in 2025, reaching approximately $5 billion, largely driven by a shift in sourcing petroleum and industrial goods toward Singapore during regional border disruptions.
  • Investment Diversification: Samdech Techo urged both nations to look beyond traditional trade, focusing on high-tech investment, food processing, and the digital economy.
  • Political Trust: Both leaders emphasized that strong political ties provide the necessary foundation for translating diplomatic goodwill into concrete economic outcomes.

Singapore as a Strategic Hub for “Green Gold”

Ambassador Teo Lay Cheng highlighted the strong and positive relations maintained throughout her tenure. Singapore remains Cambodia’s sixth-largest trading partner and a vital gateway for Cambodian agricultural “Green Gold” and textiles to reach global markets. The Ambassador expressed her confidence that the foundation laid over the past five years would support the next phase of “comprehensive cooperation and long-lasting stability.”
