The Cambodian government has delivered urgent aid to 500 families who had to leave their homes because of a recent event near the border. These families are currently staying safely at a temple (pagoda) in the Banteay Meanchey province in the northwest.
This aid delivery was approved by Prime Minister Hun Manet and First Lady Dr. Pich Chanmony. It comes after a shooting incident on November 12th near the border, which caused people from Prey Chan and Chork Chey villages to quickly evacuate. Tragically, one Cambodian person died and three others were injured in the incident.
On Saturday, Banteay Meanchey Provincial Governor Oum Reatrey personally oversaw the distribution of these aid packages at the Chan Sy Samaky Ratanaram Pagoda, where the families are sheltered.
Each family received essential supplies, including:
- 25 kilograms of rice
- Instant noodles
- A mosquito net, blanket, and pillow
- Clean drinking water
- 100,000 Riel (about US$25) in cash
Governor Oum Reatrey stated that this support shows the Royal Governmentโs strong promise to protect and care for all citizens who are impacted by violence and security issues. He stressed that the government is focused on helping these vulnerable communities no matter what their political beliefs are.
A representative for the displaced families shared their deep thanks for the help, saying, “We are truly grateful for this assistance during a very hard time. This support takes away some of our immediate worries and shows that the government cares about us.”
The families expressed their hope that the tensions near the border will be solved quickly so they can return home safely. The Cambodian government has promised to continue taking all necessary steps to protect its citizens in the affected border areas.
