Cambodia-China Partnership: Xi Jinping Pledges Aid and Ceasefire Backing

TIANJIN, CHINA — In a significant boost to the Cambodia-China partnership, Chinese President H.E. Xi Jinping has pledged 20 million yuan (approximately US$2.8 million) in humanitarian aid. The announcement came during a bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet on August 30, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus 2025 Summit. The aid is designated to help repair damages and ease the suffering of people affected by the recent armed conflict in late July.

The announcement was confirmed by H.E. Meas Sophorn, Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Prime Minister. During their high-level talks, President Xi Jinping also reaffirmed China’s strong support for the ceasefire between the Cambodian and Thai armed forces. He voiced clear backing for the ASEAN ceasefire observation mechanism, which is led by Malaysia, and expressed hope for the swift establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT).

Beyond immediate assistance, the Chinese President pledged continued support for Cambodia in enhancing its self-reliance and development capacity, while also safeguarding its national sovereignty. This commitment underscores the strong and enduring strategic ties between the two nations, which are crucial for regional stability and peace. The successful meeting highlights the Cambodian government’s proactive approach to securing international support for national stability and progress.
