So, Cambodia is seriously not messing around when it comes to online scams!
Their Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS) basically just told the UK Ambassador that the government is totally committed to wiping out fraud. They’re ramping up their official systems and getting better at working with other countries to do it.
Just the other day (November 11th, to be exact), the head of the CCOS Secretariat, a Senior Minister named Santepundit Chhay Sinarith, met up with Dominic Williams, the British Ambassador to Cambodia. The goal was to lay out exactly what Cambodia’s game plan is.
Santepundit Sinarith explained that the government is super determined to tackle all this tech-based fraud. That’s why they even created the CCOS in the first place! He said the CCOS is like an extra coordinator that steps in and helps existing agencies. They basically push local authorities to take direct responsibility for stopping, finding, and breaking up any scams starting in their own areas.
He then went over what they’ve managed to accomplish recently. He stressed that working with other countries is hugeโlike, absolutely critical. He said international help is key to figuring out how these criminals operate, shutting down their networks, and stopping tech-enabled fraud through joint investigations, sharing info, and learning best practices from each other.
The UK Ambassador, Dominic Williams, was pretty impressed. He gave props to the Cambodian government for setting up the CCOS and said he was happy about how the relationship between the two countries is getting stronger. He confirmed that the UK is definitely keen on expanding cooperation in general to help Cambodia grow and stay resilient.
Specifically, the Ambassador said he wants to team up more closely with the CCOS to help each other out in the fight against online fraud.
The meeting wrapped up with them talking about the next steps for cooperation and how they can build up their shared skills to make their joint efforts against tech fraud even more effective. They’re making a real push!
