PHNOM PENH — In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen has secured a commitment from Vietnam to actively support the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. The pledge was made during a working meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister H.E. Pham Minh Chinh on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in Hanoi.

Senate Spokesperson H.E. Chea Thirith confirmed that the discussions focused on implementing a mechanism to ensure the ceasefire is effective. He noted that the Vietnamese Prime Minister expressed a strong desire for a peaceful resolution and pledged to work closely with the current ASEAN Chair, Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Anwar Ibrahim, to monitor the situation. Vietnam’s proactive role is a clear signal of its commitment to seeing tensions between the two nations de-escalate and the border situation return to normal.
According to H.E. Chea Thirith, Vietnam views the unity of ASEAN as vital to the organization’s regional and international influence. He stated that the meeting underscored a shared commitment to resolving the “deadlock” and “mutual tension” for the benefit of both Cambodia and Thailand. The Vietnamese Prime Minister’s support for the ceasefire underscores the strong diplomatic ties between the two countries and their shared interest in fostering a peaceful and prosperous Southeast Asia.
The high-level meeting took place on the sidelines of Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s official visit to Vietnam, where he attended the commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam’s Independence Day. This diplomatic effort highlights Cambodia’s continued commitment to seeking peaceful resolutions through high-level dialogue and regional cooperation.
