PHNOM PENH — Cambodia is systematically transforming its rich culinary heritage into a high-yielding economic engine by integrating traditional Khmer cuisine into the core of its national tourism architecture.
The Ministry of Tourism hosted a high-level seminar on June 30, 2026, titled “Tourism Diplomacy and Gastronomy Tourism Linked with Gastro-Diplomacy.” Co-chaired by Minister of Tourism H.E. Huot Hak and Neak Oknha Lu Meng, Co-Chair of the Government-Private Sector Tourism Working Group (Group “B”), the strategic forum convened approximately 250 top-tier policymakers, foreign diplomats, culinary experts, and hospitality stakeholders.
The centralized objective of the summit is to formalize an aggressive national roadmap that leverages gastronomy as a potent “soft power” mechanism to stimulate both domestic and international visitor arrivals.
“Modern global travelers look beyond mere sightseeing; they demand immersive cultural narratives,” stated H.E. Huot Hak during his opening address. “Today’s tourists want to experience authentic local gastronomy, discover ancestral histories, and engage directly with community lifestyles to secure a genuine connection that reflects the absolute uniqueness of the destination.”
To spearhead this sectoral shift, the Ministry of Tourism’s blueprint focuses on three tactical pillars:
- Culinary Innovation & Agri-Tourism Intersections: Developing specialized epicurean travel routes and pairing agro-tourism excursions with curated culinary experiences. These high-value niche products are engineered to extend overnight stays and maximize direct tourist expenditure within local economies.
- Elevated Hygiene with Culinary Authenticity: Accelerating modern food safety and hygiene certification frameworks across the hospitality value chain while strictly preserving the ancestral, unadulterated “original flavors” of Khmer cuisine.
- The 2026 Francophonie Summit Launchpad: Exploiting upcoming premier multilateral assemblies to showcase Cambodia’s gourmet offerings to world leaders. The high-profile Francophonie Summit in November 2026 is officially designated as the definitive international stage to elevate the Kingdom’s hospitality stature.
By fusing deep-rooted cultural identity with targeted commercial tourism products, Cambodia aims to incentivize Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), strengthen its international brand equity, and ensure sustainable economic returns that cascade directly back into rural and local communities.
