If you’ve been waiting for a sign to book that life-changing trip to Southeast Asia, this is it.

Siem Reap — the cultural heartbeat of Cambodia and the gateway to the legendary temples of Angkor Archaeological Park — has officially been named one of Asia’s Best Cultural Destinations for 2026 by Tripadvisor. And no, this isn’t just another tourism headline. This is global validation.

Ranked 5th in Asia and 13th globally, Siem Reap has stepped confidently onto the world stage. And here’s the big question: Why now? Why is the world flocking to Cambodia’s ancient jewel?

Let’s unpack it.

A Global Spotlight on Siem Reap

When a platform like Tripadvisor releases its annual awards, the travel industry listens. These rankings aren’t based on marketing campaigns or political influence. They’re built on real traveler reviews — thousands upon thousands of authentic experiences collected over 12 months.

And Siem Reap didn’t just make the list.

It soared.

The recognition places it alongside world-class destinations like Singapore, which topped both the Asia and global cultural rankings. That’s elite company. And it signals something powerful: Cambodia is no longer an “undiscovered gem.” It’s a must-visit cultural powerhouse.

The Magic of Angkor: More Than Just a Sunrise

Let’s talk about the obvious star of the show: Angkor Wat.

When the morning sun spills over its lotus-shaped towers, it doesn’t just light up stone. It awakens history. The reflection in the still water feels almost sacred — like you’re watching time itself pause.

But Angkor isn’t just one temple.

The massive Angkor Archaeological Park is one of the largest religious complexes in the world. Within its boundaries lies the majestic royal city of Angkor Thom, built in the 12th century. Towering stone faces smile enigmatically at visitors. Ancient corridors whisper stories of kings, warriors, and spiritual devotion.

This isn’t sightseeing. It’s immersion.

And that’s exactly what today’s travelers crave.

UNESCO Recognition and Timeless Prestige

In 1992, Angkor was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List — a moment that preserved Cambodia’s crown jewel for future generations. But preservation alone doesn’t create global admiration. Experience does.

And the numbers tell a compelling story.

According to Angkor Enterprise, the park welcomed 955,131 international visitors in 2025, generating more than $44.7 million in revenue. That’s not just tourism. That’s economic momentum fueled by cultural reverence.

Nearly one million travelers chose to walk through history. Why?

Because Angkor offers something rare in today’s world: authenticity.

Siem Reap Is More Than Temples

Here’s where many people underestimate Siem Reap.

Yes, the temples are breathtaking. But the city itself? It’s evolving.

Modern cafes blend seamlessly with colonial architecture. Boutique hotels offer luxury wrapped in Khmer hospitality. Night markets buzz with handcrafted art and traditional textiles. Cultural performances bring ancient dance forms to life.

And the food?

Let’s just say Cambodian cuisine deserves its own spotlight. From fragrant fish amok to street-side noodle soups, every bite feels rooted in heritage.

Siem Reap isn’t stuck in the past. It balances ancient grandeur with modern comfort — and that balance is magnetic.

Why Cultural Tourism Is Booming in 2026

There’s a shift happening in global travel.

People aren’t just chasing beaches anymore. They want depth. Meaning. Stories.

Cultural tourism has become one of the fastest-growing travel segments worldwide. Travelers want to connect with history, understand traditions, and experience something transformative.

Siem Reap delivers that in abundance.

Where else can you cycle through jungle-covered ruins in the morning, explore centuries-old royal cities by afternoon, and enjoy fine dining under lantern-lit skies at night?

It’s layered. It’s textured. It’s unforgettable.

A Destination That Feels Personal

Here’s the thing about Siem Reap: it doesn’t overwhelm you. It welcomes you.

The scale of Angkor is grand, yes — but the experience feels intimate. You can find quiet temple corners where you’re alone with 800 years of history. You can speak with local guides whose families have lived in the region for generations.

It feels human.

And in an era of overtourism and crowded landmarks, that human touch matters.

Competing With Asia’s Cultural Giants

Ranking 5th in Asia is no small feat.

Asia is home to some of the world’s most iconic cultural capitals — cities with centuries of influence, monumental architecture, and global recognition.

Yet Siem Reap stands shoulder-to-shoulder with them.

That speaks volumes.

It’s not about size. It’s about impact. The emotional resonance of watching dawn break over Angkor Wat rivals any grand cathedral or palace in the world.

And Tripadvisor’s recognition confirms what seasoned travelers already knew: Siem Reap isn’t just worthy of attention — it’s exceptional.

Sustainable Growth and Cultural Preservation

Another reason behind Siem Reap’s rising global reputation? Sustainability.

Efforts to preserve Angkor’s delicate structures while accommodating tourism growth have intensified in recent years. Authorities and cultural organizations are working to ensure that tourism supports conservation rather than harms it.

This balance is critical.

The world’s travelers are becoming more conscious. They want destinations that protect their heritage. Siem Reap’s continued collaboration between government bodies, preservationists, and tourism stakeholders strengthens its appeal.

It’s not just about visiting history. It’s about protecting it.

The Economic Ripple Effect

Tourism isn’t just about photos and passport stamps.

The nearly $45 million generated in 2025 contributes to local livelihoods, infrastructure, and community development. Hotels, tour operators, artisans, and small businesses benefit directly from global recognition.

Every visitor supports a wider ecosystem.

And as Siem Reap climbs the cultural rankings, that ecosystem expands.

Recognition leads to investment. Investment leads to opportunity. Opportunity strengthens preservation and quality experiences.

It’s a virtuous cycle.

Is 2026 the Perfect Time to Visit?

Short answer? Yes.

With global recognition at an all-time high, improved tourism infrastructure, and increasing flight connectivity across Southeast Asia, Siem Reap is more accessible than ever.

Yet it still retains its soul.

That’s the sweet spot in travel — when a destination is celebrated but not yet saturated.

Imagine standing before Angkor Wat at sunrise, knowing you’re witnessing one of the world’s most celebrated cultural landmarks — ranked among the very best. It’s not just a vacation photo. It’s a memory etched into your personal timeline.

Final Thoughts: Why the World Is Watching Siem Reap

Siem Reap’s rise isn’t accidental.

It’s the result of timeless architecture, spiritual depth, evolving hospitality, and authentic cultural experiences that resonate with modern travelers.

Being named one of Asia’s Best Cultural Destinations for 2026 isn’t just a trophy. It’s a statement.

The world isn’t just visiting Cambodia anymore.

It’s rediscovering it.

And if you’ve ever dreamed of walking through living history — of experiencing a place where ancient stone meets golden sunrise — Siem Reap is calling.

Will you answer?

Watching the sunrise at Angkor Wat is a bucket-list experience for many. However, the reality of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of tourists can often ruin the spiritual moment. According to AKP and local insights, the surge in tourism in 2026 means visitors need a smarter strategy to find tranquility.

The “Insider” Alternative

Most tourists flock to the reflection pond in front of the temple. Instead, head to the northern or eastern side of the outer gallery. While you won’t get the classic “mirror effect” of the pond, you will gain a private, golden-hour view of the stone towers with almost no one around you.

Experience the Silence

The true magic of Angkor happens in the silence. By choosing a less crowded spot, you can hear the distant chanting from nearby pagodas and the awakening of the jungle. This “Slow Travel” approach is what makes your visit to Cambodia truly memorable.

Pro-Tips for 2026:

Arrive Early, but Stay Late: After the sun rises, don’t rush for breakfast. This is the best time to explore the inner galleries while the crowds are busy eating.

Respect the Peace: Remember that Angkor is a living religious site. Wearing respectful attire is essential.

FAQ

Where is the best spot to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat without crowds?
Instead of the reflection pond, try the eastern library or the quiet corners of the northern outer gallery for a more private experience.

What time should I arrive at Angkor Wat for sunrise?
It is recommended to be at the temple gate by 5:00 AM to secure your spot and enjoy the pre-dawn atmosphere.

Is Angkor Wat very crowded in 2026?
Yes, with the new international airport and increased global travel, Angkor Wat is popular. Using an “Insider” strategy is key to avoiding the masses.

What does a nation owe to those who gave everything for it?

That question echoed powerfully as Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet stood before the families of 18 fallen heroes and made one thing crystal clear: Cambodia does not forget its defenders. It remembers. It honors. And it stands firmly beside their families.

In a deeply moving gathering in Siem Reap province, the Prime Minister reaffirmed that the Royal Government of Cambodia places the highest importance on honoring the heroism and sacrifices of soldiers and officers who gave their lives defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity. But this wasn’t just political protocol. It was personal. It was solemn. And it carried weight.

Let’s unpack what this moment truly means for Cambodia—and why it matters far beyond a single ceremony.

A Nation’s Promise: Honoring Fallen Soldiers with Dignity

Some sacrifices are beyond words.

Eighteen brave men from Oddar Meanchey province—members of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, the Royal Gendarmerie, and the National Police—lost their lives in service to the nation. They weren’t just uniformed officers. They were fathers. Sons. Brothers. Breadwinners.

When Prime Minister Hun Manet, accompanied by his spouse Lok Chumteav Dr. Pich Chanmony, met with the grieving families, he didn’t deliver empty rhetoric. He delivered reassurance.

He reaffirmed that the Royal Government deeply remembers the sacrifices of these fallen service members. Their courage in safeguarding Cambodia’s sovereignty and protecting its territorial integrity will never be forgotten.

And that matters.

Because memory is the foundation of national identity. When a country remembers its heroes, it strengthens its soul.

Safeguarding National Sovereignty: The Ultimate Sacrifice

Let’s be honest—sovereignty isn’t just a political term. It’s the invisible shield that protects a nation’s independence, security, and future.

These fallen soldiers stood on the front lines of that shield.

In reaffirming the government’s gratitude, Hun Manet emphasized that their bravery and unwavering determination were not just acts of duty—they were acts of profound patriotism. They defended Cambodia’s territorial integrity at the highest cost.

Think of it like this: sovereignty is the roof over a nation’s house. Without it, everything underneath is vulnerable. These soldiers were the pillars holding that roof in place.

And when pillars fall, the structure trembles.

That’s why honoring their sacrifice isn’t symbolic—it’s essential.

Standing Beside the Families Left Behind

But here’s the real question: What happens after the ceremony ends?

What happens when the cameras leave and the silence sets in?

Hun Manet made it clear—the Royal Government’s commitment does not stop at condolences.

He stressed continued support for the families of fallen heroes, particularly in three crucial areas:

Livelihood assistance

Education opportunities for their children

Restoration of family economic stability

Let’s break that down.

When a primary breadwinner is lost, a family doesn’t just lose a loved one—they lose financial security, routine, and stability. The ripple effect can last for generations if not addressed.

By prioritizing livelihood support and educational opportunities, the government is aiming to transform grief into resilience. It’s about ensuring that children of fallen heroes don’t inherit hardship—they inherit opportunity.

And that’s a powerful message.

Economic Stability After Loss: Turning Pain into Protection

Losing a soldier isn’t only an emotional tragedy—it’s often an economic one.

Many of the fallen officers were the main providers for their households. Their absence creates an immediate financial vacuum. And if left unattended, that vacuum can swallow a family whole.

Hun Manet’s emphasis on restoring family economic stability signals something important: this government understands the practical realities of sacrifice.

Support is not charity. It’s responsibility.

A nation that asks its citizens to defend it must, in turn, defend those citizens’ families when tragedy strikes. It’s a social contract written in sacrifice and sealed with gratitude.

Leadership With Compassion: A Personal Touch

There’s something deeply symbolic about the Prime Minister attending the gathering alongside his spouse, Lok Chumteav Dr. Pich Chanmony.

Why does that matter?

Because leadership isn’t just about policy—it’s about presence.

By personally meeting the families in Siem Reap province, Hun Manet demonstrated empathy, not distance. He wasn’t speaking from behind a podium in Phnom Penh. He was standing face-to-face with grieving parents, widows, and children.

And in moments like that, words carry different weight.

He expressed sincere appreciation to the families, acknowledging that their loss is also the nation’s loss. He recognized their vital contribution—not just the bravery of the fallen soldiers, but the strength of the families who supported them.

Behind every uniform stands a family who shares the burden.

Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and National Security Commitment

The fallen heroes represented key pillars of Cambodia’s security apparatus:

Royal Cambodian Armed Forces

Royal Gendarmerie

National Police

Each institution plays a critical role in maintaining national stability, law enforcement, and territorial defense.

When members of these forces fall, it reminds the nation that peace is never passive. It is protected. It is defended. It is earned.

Hun Manet’s message reinforces continued national support for security forces and underscores the government’s dedication to strengthening Cambodia’s defense structure while caring for those who serve within it.

It’s a balancing act—strength and compassion, power and empathy.

National Unity Through Remembrance

Here’s something we often overlook: remembrance unites.

When a country honors its fallen heroes, it reinforces shared values—bravery, loyalty, service, sacrifice. These aren’t abstract concepts. They are lived realities.

Hun Manet highlighted the bravery and unwavering determination demonstrated by the fallen soldiers. But he also implicitly highlighted something bigger—national unity.

Because when a soldier falls defending the nation, the entire nation shares that responsibility.

Grief, in this context, becomes collective. And collective grief can strengthen collective resolve.

Cambodia’s Long-Term Commitment to Military Families

Let’s zoom out.

This isn’t just about one gathering in Siem Reap. It’s about a broader policy direction.

By emphasizing continued assistance programs, education support, and livelihood development, the Royal Government signals long-term commitment—not short-term sympathy.

Supporting the families of fallen soldiers is an investment in social stability.

Why?

Because when military families feel protected and valued, morale strengthens across the armed forces. Future generations see that service is respected, not forgotten. Confidence in leadership grows.

It’s like tending to roots so the tree can continue to grow tall.

The Human Side of National Defense

We often talk about defense in terms of budgets, equipment, and strategies. But defense is, at its core, human.

It’s the young officer stationed far from home.
It’s the parent waiting anxiously.
It’s the child who sees a uniform and feels pride.

Hun Manet’s reaffirmation brings that humanity back into focus.

The fallen soldiers’ bravery wasn’t abstract. It was personal. It involved real people making real sacrifices under immense pressure.

And the families who supported them made sacrifices too—living with uncertainty, separation, and risk.

Recognizing that shared burden is crucial to building a compassionate state.

A Message of Gratitude and National Resilience

At the heart of the Prime Minister’s remarks was gratitude.

Not performative gratitude. Genuine acknowledgment.

He thanked the families for their contribution to the nation through the loyalty and determination of their loved ones. He recognized that their sacrifice strengthened Cambodia.

And that’s an important shift in perspective.

Instead of framing loss solely as tragedy, it’s also framed as contribution. Painful, yes—but meaningful.

A resilient nation doesn’t erase its scars. It honors them.

What This Means for Cambodia’s Future

So where does this leave Cambodia?

It leaves the country with a reinforced commitment to:

Honoring fallen heroes

Protecting national sovereignty

Supporting military families

Strengthening social stability

Upholding national unity

These aren’t isolated themes. They’re interconnected pillars of governance.

When a government stands beside grieving families, it signals maturity. It signals responsibility. And perhaps most importantly, it signals continuity.

Cambodia’s future, like any nation’s, depends not only on economic growth or diplomatic strategy—but on how it treats those who protect it.

Final Thoughts: A Nation That Remembers

At the end of the day, ceremonies fade. Headlines change. News cycles move on.

But memory endures.

Prime Minister Hun Manet’s reaffirmation serves as a reminder that Cambodia honors the ultimate sacrifice made by its fallen soldiers. It commits to protecting their families. It recognizes that sovereignty is defended by real people, with real lives, and real loved ones.

And maybe that’s the true measure of a nation’s strength—not just how it defends its borders, but how it defends the families of those who stood at those borders.

Because when a country remembers its heroes and protects their families, it doesn’t just preserve the past.

It secures the future.

Visa has introduced its “Shop Small Everyday” program in Cambodia, starting with a pilot in Siem Reap. The initiative aims to support local entrepreneurs by making digital payments like “Tap to Pay” and QR scanning more accessible to tourists and residents alike.

<img decoding="async" width="1000" height="563" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/visa-shop-small-everyday-cambodia-siem-reap-2026.jpg" alt="Visa pilots the "Shop Small Everyday" program in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
What Happened?

Visa officially launched the “Shop Small Everyday” campaign on January 26, 2026. The program focuses on helping Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) transition from cash-only operations to digital systems.

The rollout began in Siem Reap, covering major tourist hubs like the Angkor Archaeological Park and the new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport. Visa is providing physical marketing materials to local food stalls, clothing shops, and grocery outlets so shoppers can easily identify where digital payments are accepted.

Why This Matters

For U.S. travelers, expats, and tech-watchers, this development addresses a common pain point: the reliance on physical cash in emerging markets.

Improved Safety: Using Tap to Pay or Scan to Pay reduces the need to carry large amounts of local currency, lowering the risk of loss or theft.

Support for Small Business: These tools allow local “mom-and-pop” shops to participate in the global economy, helping them grow and stabilize their income.

Global Interoperability: This move leverages the Bakong KHQR framework, a sophisticated system that allows different bank apps and payment cards to work together seamlessly.

What Users Should Know

If you are visiting or doing business in Cambodia, the payment experience is becoming much more similar to the United States:

Payment Methods: You can use a mobile banking app to scan a merchant’s QR code (linked to your Visa card) or simply tap your card/smartphone on a payment terminal.

Tourism Perks: To encourage adoption, Visa is offering rewards, including Brown Coffee vouchers and free registration for local marathons and fun runs.

Simplified Travel: Through a partnership with the Bakong Tourists App, international visitors can link their home-based Visa cards to pay locally without needing a Cambodian bank account.

Expert / Industry Context

This initiative aligns with the National Bank of Cambodia’s goal to increase financial inclusion. By shifting away from cash, the government can better track economic growth and ensure more citizens have access to formal banking.

Historically, small merchants in Southeast Asia struggled with the high costs of card terminals. However, by using KHQR (QR code-based payments), Visa is utilizing a low-cost “software-first” approach that allows even the smallest street vendor to accept digital payments using just a printed sign or a smartphone.

What Happens Next?

While the pilot is currently focused on Siem Reap, several next steps are confirmed:

Expansion: Visa plans to move the “Shop Small Everyday” program to other provinces across Cambodia following the Siem Reap trial.

Digital Education: Ongoing training sessions will be provided to small business owners to help them manage digital records and optimize their online presence.

Enhanced App Features: Further updates to the Bakong Tourists App are expected to make it even easier for Western travelers to use their cards instantly upon arrival.

In recent months, TikTok and Instagram feeds have been flooded with short-form videos featuring young travelers and top-tier influencers sprinting through ancient corridors, leaping over obstacles, and exploring temple ruins at the break of dawn. This “Real-Life Temple Run” trend is more than just viral entertainment; it has become a powerful economic engine, propelling Cambodian tourism to new heights in 2026.

Why Angkor Wat is the Ultimate Backdrop for This Trend

The choice of Angkor Wat is far from coincidental. The architecture of Khmer temples—particularly Ta Prohm and Angkor Wat—strikingly mirrors the atmosphere of the iconic mobile game:

Ancient, Mystical Passageways: Moss-covered walkways and intricately carved stone walls create a cinematic environment that feels like a real-world 3D game level.

Light and Shadow: Sunrise at Angkor Wat provides a natural “golden hour” glow, allowing creators to produce high-quality, cinematic footage with minimal editing.

The Spirit of Adventure: For Gen Z and Gen Alpha, visiting Angkor Wat is no longer just about observing history—it’s about “stepping into a legend.”

The 2026 Digital Tourism Shift

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Tourism, the integration of digital technology and influencer partnerships has become a cornerstone of the 2026 strategic plan. The Temple Run trend has successfully:

Captured New Markets: Attracting social media-savvy travelers from China, India, and Europe.

Boosted Local Revenue: Trend-driven tourists tend to stay longer to explore lesser-known temples beyond the main circuit.

Comparative Impact: Social Media & Tourism (2024 vs. 2026)

Indicator

2024 (Baseline)

2026 (Current)

Angkor TikTok Content

~500,000 videos

>5 million videos

Primary Tourist Demographic

Families & Traditional Tourists

Gen Z & Content Creators

Code of Conduct Awareness

Moderate

High (Integrated via Apps)

The Challenge: Balancing “Virality” with Conservation

Sacred Site Etiquette: Visitors should avoid excessive noise and refrain from disrupting those using the temples for worship and prayer.

FAQ: The Temple Run Trend at Angkor Wat

1. Is it legal to film “Temple Run” style videos at the temples?

Yes, filming is permitted; however, you must follow the site’s safety guidelines. Running excessively fast or jumping on temple structures is prohibited to ensure personal safety and the preservation of the site.

2. Which temples are best for this style of content?

Ta Prohm (famed for its giant tree roots), Preah Khan (known for its long corridors), and Beng Mealea (for a rugged jungle vibe) are the most popular locations.

3. Are there digital tools to help visitors?

In 2026, the “Angkor Digital Pass” features AR (Augmented Reality) capabilities that overlay historical data onto your screen while you film.

4. How does this trend benefit the local economy?

Beyond ticket sales, it supports local businesses such as traditional costume rentals, digital tour guides, and boutique hotels in Siem Reap.

The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) has stepped in to help families who had to leave their homes due to recent fighting. These families are currently staying in safe areas within Battambang province.

On Wednesday, the President of the CRC, Samdech Bun Rany Hun Sen, approved a special delivery of 20 tons of rice. Along with the rice, they are sending 200 cases of bottled water and 200 cases of soft drinks to be handed out to those in need.

This help for Battambang is part of a much larger effort to support people across the country. Just a few days ago, on December 22, the CRC sent out a massive amount of aid—including 100 tons of rice and thousands of cases of drinks—to five other provinces: Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Siem Reap, Pursat, and Banteay Meanchey.

The CRC, which is also supported by the Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, shared a big “thank you” to everyone who has donated money and supplies. It is because of these kind donations that the organization can continue to provide food and safety for families staying in camps across Cambodia.

Ms. Kasahara Tomoko Commended by Japan’s Foreign Minister for Enriching the Lives of Thousands of Underprivileged Children

SIEM REAP, Cambodia – A long-serving Japanese volunteer, Ms. Kasahara Tomoko, has received a prestigious commendation from Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs for her unwavering dedication to Cambodian children. The award recognizes her nearly 20 years of humanitarian work and her significant role in strengthening the friendship between Japan and Cambodia.

The official commendation ceremony took place on the evening of December 11 in Siem Reap city.

I. An Unwavering Commitment to the Arts

Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Ueno Atsushi, praised Ms. Kasahara’s commitment since she established her small non-profit, the “Little Art School,” in 2008.

Drawing on her professional background as an art teacher, she has consistently offered free arts classes and Japanese-language instruction to disadvantaged youth across the country.

Scale of Impact: According to Ambassador Ueno, Ms. Kasahara has conducted approximately 4,200 classes across 12 provinces, even reaching remote rural areas through mobile classes.

Student Reach: Each year, between 350 and 450 students participate in her vital programs.

Cultural Exchange: Artwork created by her students has been proudly showcased at cultural events in both Cambodia and Japan, significantly boosting cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

II. Nourishment for the Heart

The Ambassador highlighted that Ms. Kasahara’s work was inspired by her desire to ensure that “Cambodian children can experience their one and only childhood with open hearts and minds.”

Ms. Kasahara, celebrating the school’s 19th anniversary this year, shared her philosophy:

“I believe that to live, people need nourishment for both the body and the heart… Food nourishes the body, but cultural experiences—such as art—nourish the mind. Art helps children understand the world more deeply through expressing themselves, connecting them to the joy of living.”

The Ambassador noted that while art instruction remains limited in public schools in Cambodia, Ms. Kasahara has filled a crucial gap, providing joy, hope, and inspiration to thousands of children—all delivered completely free of charge.

III. Finding a Treasure in Cambodia

Reflecting on her nearly two decades in Cambodia, Ms. Kasahara described the experience as irreplaceable. She shared that the smiles and bright eyes of the children, and the colourful worlds they create through art, feel like “discovering a treasure.” She credited these moments for sustaining her work and reminding her of the immense support she has received from partners throughout her long journey.

The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) and the Japanese Red Cross Society (Hiroshima Branch) have finished their planning for an exciting upcoming youth exchange trip. This trip is a key step in the partnership they recently strengthened.

Planning the Trip

CRC Secretary-General, H.E. Ms. Pum Chantinie, met on Thursday with Mr. Hiroaki Sakai, Secretary-General of the Japanese Red Cross Hiroshima Chapter, at the CRC headquarters in Phnom Penh.

Their discussions focused on the study and exchange program scheduled for December 16–22, 2025. The Japanese delegation will include 15 youth and staff members from Hiroshima, who will visit Siem Reap province and Phnom Penh.

Strengthening Cooperation

H.E. Ms. Pum Chantinie welcomed Mr. Sakai and highlighted how important this visit is, especially since the CRC and the Japanese Red Cross recently signed a five-year agreement (2025–2029). She called the agreement a major milestone for improving cooperation, encouraging youth leadership, and expanding humanitarian work between the two nations.

The program for the Hiroshima youth is designed to be very hands-on, featuring many community activities, such as:

Environmental awareness and climate action.

Public health and safety.

Cultural exchange.

H.E. Ms. Chantinie promised that the CRC would offer its best hospitality to the Japanese delegation. She also plans to meet the visitors in Siem Reap and join them for a tree-planting activity.

Positive First Impressions

Mr. Sakai expressed his sincere thanks for the warm welcome from the Cambodian Red Cross. After arriving and meeting with the CRC Siem Reap Branch, he shared a positive view of the country.

“I was pleased to observe Cambodia’s peace, safety, and welcoming environment—factors I believe will greatly support the forthcoming youth exchange programme,” Mr. Sakai noted.

He also asked the CRC leaders for their continued support in looking after the well-being of the Hiroshima youth throughout their visit.

Mr. Sakai’s Visit

Mr. Sakai arrived in Cambodia on November 18, 2025, landing in Siem Reap. While there, he met with the provincial CRC leaders and visited places prepared for the December program, including the Chong Khneas floating village, the CRC Millennium Park, and guesthouses in the Angkor Thom area. He also toured the famous Angkor Wat Temple complex before heading to Phnom Penh for the high-level meeting.

Hey, check this out! A really important official, Senior Minister Ly Thuch, just gave a huge thumbs-up to a famous Chinese company choosing to invest in Cambodia.

He basically said that when world-class investors like this pick Cambodia, it shows that everyone is feeling super confident about Prime Minister Hun Manet’s leadership and the government’s policies that are really pushing to help businesses and foreign investment.

Dr. Ly Thuch made these comments when he went to the opening ceremony for Yangguofu, a seriously famous Chinese restaurant chain. This is a huge deal because it’s their first location in Cambodia, and it officially opened on November 12, 2025.

This global franchise is massive—they have over 7,300 restaurants in more than 20 countries! They teamed up with a local partner, President Club, to bring it to the Cambodian market.

Speaking for the government, the Senior Minister gave a big thank you to the Yangguofu team and their partners for picking Cambodia as the spot for their flagship brand. He stressed that this smart move proves that international investors trust Cambodia’s stable political situation, its strong economy, and the capable leadership under Prime Minister Hun Manet.

He said, “The Cambodian government is fully focused on policies that actively support and protect businesses and foreign investment. The fact that Yangguofu is opening their first branch here just shows how much potential Cambodia has and how attractive we are as a top spot for investment in Southeast Asia.”

Dr. Ly Thuch also encouraged the restaurant to open even more places around the country, especially in the services and tourism sectors. He thinks this will be a huge help for creating jobs and giving Cambodian young people new skills.

Mr. Wang Andy, the Founder and CEO of President Club, confirmed just how big the Yangguofu brand is, saying they operate more than 7,300 restaurants globally. He explained that opening the first Cambodian branch is a key part of their plan to promote Chinese cuisine globally and expand into new, growing markets across Cambodia and Southeast Asia.

Fun fact: They already have over 7,300 stores worldwide, and President Club plans to open around 500 more across Southeast Asia in the next three years!

Mr. Wang added that Cambodia’s location is super strategic for Yangguofu’s expansion plans. He even revealed a big, ambitious goal: they want to build a Yangguofu food production facility in Cambodia to supply both the local restaurants and the whole region!

He finished by saying, “Now that the first Yangguofu branch is open, President Club is going to keep working with more Chinese companies, using a spirit of ‘harmony and mutual prosperity’ to successfully promote Chinese brands on the global stage.”
