Techo International Airport: Cambodia’s New Gateway to the World

PHNOM PENH — Techo International Airport (TIA), a landmark achievement and a new source of national pride, officially begins operations today, September 9, 2025. This state-of-the-art facility represents a major leap forward for Cambodia’s aviation sector and its economy. The airport will be formally inaugurated on October 20 under the patronage of Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Replacing the current Phnom Penh International Airport, TIA is set to become Cambodia’s primary aviation hub, ready to meet the demands of a growing global market.

Inaugural and Final Flights Mark a New Chapter

The first flight to touch down at the new facility will be a charter from China operated by Air Cambodia, the national flag carrier, carrying tourists eager to explore the country. In a symbolic farewell, Korean Air will be the last airline to depart from the old Phnom Penh International Airport, marking the end of an era.

A Strategic Hub with World-Class Infrastructure

Spanning a massive 2,600-hectare site across Kandal and Takeo provinces, Techo International Airport is strategically located just 20 kilometers south of Cambodia’s capital. Its prime location and advanced design are key to its success.

The airport’s most notable feature is its 4F classification, the highest level in international aviation. This prestigious designation allows the airport to accommodate all aircraft types, including commercial giants like the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747. This capability positions Cambodia to handle significant increases in passenger and cargo traffic.

Phase 1: Boosting Passenger and Cargo Capacity

During its initial phase, the airport is equipped to handle up to 13 million passengers and 26,000 tons of cargo annually. This substantial capacity is crucial for supporting Cambodia’s economic and tourism goals. The new infrastructure will significantly improve connectivity and logistics, benefiting businesses and travelers alike.

Aviation as an Economic Driver for Cambodia

The aviation industry is a critical component of a nation’s economy, linking tourism, trade, and diplomacy. By investing in a world-class international airport, Cambodia is actively strengthening its infrastructure to attract foreign investment and foster international relations. Techo International Airport is more than just a transportation hub; it is a catalyst for economic growth, strategically designed to connect Cambodia more effectively with the global community.
