Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Cambodian Minister of Post and Telecommunications and Chair of the Cambodian Digital Government Committee, Chea Vandeth, announced on Friday (Dec. 5) that Cambodia is fully prepared to launch nationwide 5G mobile services starting in 2026.
The Minister delivered this major announcement at the opening of the Digital Government Forum 2025, an event focused on the nation’s digital future and presided over by Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth, representing Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Strong Foundation: 4G Coverage Reaches 94.7% of Population
Minister Chea Vandeth stated that Cambodia’s digital infrastructure, the backbone of the country’s ongoing digital transformation, has seen significant progress. Crucially, 4G mobile network coverage currently reaches 94.7 per cent of the population, providing a robust base for the next-generation network.
Strengthened Regulation Drives National Investment
Over the past five years, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC) has driven deep reforms in the telecommunications sector. This proactive strategy involved strengthening regulation and significantly increasing investment in national telecoms infrastructure. The MPTC also worked closely with all operators to expand investment plans, improve service quality, and increase 4G coverage nationwide, which simultaneously enhances revenue contributions to the state.
5G Rollout Plan Finalized with All Telecom Operators
The Minister confirmed that following the guidance of the Cambodian Prime Minister and building on the strengthened 4G foundation, the MPTC conducted an in-depth study on the rollout of 5G mobile services, scheduled to begin in January 2026.
Consultations with all telecom operators have been completed, and the ministry has coordinated closely with each operator to ensure the successful deployment of 5G across Cambodia.
“On this basis, I am pleased to announce that Cambodia is now fully prepared to launch 5G services from 2026 onwards,” the Minister underscored.
Digital Government Transformation Receives Tech Boost
He also noted that the ministry, working with relevant public institutions and the Digital Government Committee, has aggressively pursued the digital government transformation. This includes:
- Upgrading key infrastructure and networks.
- Expanding internet capacity.
- Providing tens of thousands of computers, tablets, and devices to support digital government implementation across the public sector.
The 2026 5G launch is expected to accelerate these digital government efforts and unlock new opportunities across Cambodia’s economy.
