2026 Weather Outlook: A Cooler Dry Season and Early Rains Ahead

Cambodia Weather Forecast 2026: Cool January and Early Rains in May

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) has released its first major forecast for 2026. If you enjoy cooler weather and are looking forward to the rain, there is good news ahead. Here is what you need to know about the weather from now until May.

1. A Cooler Start to the Year

From January through early February, temperatures are expected to be lower than usual.

  • Highland & Mountain Areas: Places like Rattanakiri, Mondulkiri, Preah Vihear, and the mountain ranges (Cardamom, Dangrek, and Bokor) will feel quite chilly.
  • The Numbers: Expect nighttime temperatures to drop to around 18°C, while daytime highs will stay comfortable at about 30°C.

2. Early and Heavy Rains

This year, the rain is coming sooner than it did in 2025.

  • Pre-Monsoon Rain: Expect moderate to heavy rain starting in the second week of March.
  • Rainy Season Start: The official rainy season is predicted to begin in the second week of May.
  • Intensity: Rainfall will likely be higher than the long-term average and will be spread out well across the country.

3. Safety Warnings: Lightning and Wind

While the rain is helpful, it comes with risks. MOWRAM warns that there will be more frequent thunder, lightning, and strong gusts of wind during these storms. Everyone should stay alert and take precautions during heavy downpours.

4. Coastal Conditions

For those near the sea or planning travel to the coast, waves are expected to be between 0.50 meters and 1.75 meters high.

5. Important Advice: Save Water

Even though more rain is coming, the Ministry urges everyone—especially those in rural areas far from rivers or lakes—to use water wisely and efficiently during the dry season.
