<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cambodia’s Bakong System Achieves Record-Breaking Growth in 2025 Digital Transition</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cambodia’s financial landscape has reached a new digital pinnacle, with the <strong>Bakong Payment Service</strong> recording explosive growth in both Khmer Riel (KHR) and U.S. Dollar (USD) transactions throughout 2025. This surge, detailed in the <strong>National Bank of Cambodia’s (NBC) 2025 Annual Report</strong>, underscores the Kingdom’s rapid evolution toward a sophisticated, cashless economy.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Unprecedented Transaction Volume in 2025</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Bakong system, a blockchain-based platform initiated by the NBC, has officially become the backbone of Cambodia’s digital finance ecosystem. According to the latest data:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Khmer Riel Transactions:</strong> Processed <strong>771.2 million</strong> transactions—a 1.6-fold increase from 2024—with a total value reaching <strong>KHR 285.9 trillion</strong> (approx. $70 billion), a nearly <strong>60% year-on-year increase</strong>.</li>

<li><strong>U.S. Dollar Transactions:</strong> Surged by <strong>79.7%</strong> in volume to <strong>554.5 million</strong> transactions, totaling <strong>$152.8 billion</strong>.</li>

<li><strong>Total Ecosystem Growth:</strong> By the end of 2025, the system registered <strong>18.9 million e-wallet accounts</strong>, facilitating over <strong>1.3 billion total transactions</strong> across both currencies.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>NBC Governor H.E. Dr. Chea Serey</strong> reaffirmed that the central bank remains committed to further enhancing this infrastructure. &#8220;We will continue to improve Cambodia’s payment infrastructure to enable real-time, secure, and efficient transactions for both businesses and consumers,&#8221; she stated during the NBC&#8217;s annual meeting on January 23, 2026.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Strengthening the Investment Climate</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For <strong>foreign investors</strong> and international business leaders, the maturity of the Bakong system provides a massive competitive advantage. The platform&#8217;s success offers:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Operational Efficiency:</strong> Real-time settlement (under five seconds) for peer-to-peer and merchant payments reduces the cost of doing business.</li>

<li><strong>Financial Inclusion:</strong> With nearly double the country’s population in registered wallets, businesses can reach a vast, digitally active consumer base even in rural areas.</li>

<li><strong>Regional Interoperability:</strong> In 2025, Cambodia expanded cross-border QR payment links with <strong>Singapore, China, and Malaysia</strong>, joining existing links with Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. This allows investors and tourists to handle funds seamlessly across the region.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Vision for 2026 and Beyond</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Royal Government’s <strong>Pentagon Strategy – Phase I</strong> identifies digital economic development as a top priority. As Cambodia approaches its goal of becoming an <strong>upper middle-income country by 2030</strong>, the Bakong system acts as a &#8220;digital bridge,&#8221; attracting <strong>Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)</strong> by demonstrating a stable, modern, and transparent financial regulatory framework.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 2025 results prove that Bakong is no longer just a pilot project but a globally recognized leader in central bank digital initiatives, reinforcing <strong>economic growth in Cambodia</strong> and building deep public trust in the nation’s banking resilience.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">FAQ: Cambodia’s Bakong &amp; Digital Payments</h3>

<div class="schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block"><div class="schema-faq-section" id="faq-question-1769580462538"><strong class="schema-faq-question">How can international tourists use Bakong?</strong> <p class="schema-faq-answer">The <strong>Bakong Tourist App</strong> allows visitors to make digital payments via KHQR without a local bank account. Users can register with a passport, top up via partner kiosks or ATMs, and spend up to $3,000 per day after verification.</p> </div> <div class="schema-faq-section" id="faq-question-1769580476779"><strong class="schema-faq-question">Is Bakong a cryptocurrency?</strong> <p class="schema-faq-answer">No. While it uses blockchain technology (Hyperledger Iroha), it is a central bank-backed digital payment system that uses existing fiat currencies (KHR and USD).</p> </div> <div class="schema-faq-section" id="faq-question-1769580484226"><strong class="schema-faq-question">What are the fees for using the Bakong system?</strong> <p class="schema-faq-answer">For most retail and person-to-person transactions, the Bakong system is free of charge, which has been a primary driver of its rapid adoption by small businesses and street vendors.</p> </div> </div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>PHNOM PENH, Cambodia —</strong> Cambodia’s banking and financial sector recorded moderate credit growth and strong deposit expansion in 2025, underscoring continued system stability despite ongoing global and domestic economic headwinds, according to the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Outstanding loans rose 4.1% from a year earlier to about <strong>$63 billion</strong>, while customer deposits climbed <strong>14.7%</strong> to <strong>$65.7 billion</strong>, the central bank said in its annual report released Friday.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Non-performing loans remained at manageable levels, with banks reporting an average ratio of <strong>8.9%</strong> and other financial institutions at <strong>8.3%</strong>, the report showed.</p>

</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chea Serey added that strong deposit growth, solid capital buffers, and high liquidity levels point to sustained public confidence in the banking system.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>PHNOM PENH</strong> – National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) Governor <strong>H.E. Dr. Chea Serey</strong> met with a high-level delegation from the <strong>ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO)</strong> on Thursday to chart the course for Cambodia’s 2026 economic strategy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The meeting, led by AMRO Director <strong>Mr. Yasuto Watanabe</strong>, signaled a <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-un-partnership-2026/" type="link" id="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-un-partnership-2026/">deepening partnership as Cambodia</a> transitions from a traditional cash-based economy to a regional leader in fintech and artificial intelligence.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Global Model for Digital Payments</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mr. Watanabe lauded <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-and-china-link-payment-systems/" type="link" id="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-and-china-link-payment-systems/">Cambodia’s <strong>Bakong</strong> blockchain payment system</a>, describing it as a &#8220;global benchmark&#8221; for financial inclusion. The system has allowed Cambodia to leapfrog legacy banking infrastructure, enabling over 10 million citizens—roughly 60% of the adult population—to access digital finance.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Governor Chea Serey emphasized that these innovations are not just about convenience; they are strategic tools for:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Khmer Riel (KHR) Promotion:</strong> Increasing the use of local currency through digital interoperability.</li>

<li><strong>Regional Integration:</strong> Strengthening <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/acleda-nipl-upi-khqr-cross-border-payments-2026/" type="link" id="https://orkunsantepheap.com/acleda-nipl-upi-khqr-cross-border-payments-2026/">cross-border QR payment</a> links with Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Malaysia.</li>

<li><strong>Financial Literacy:</strong> Using tech to bring unbanked rural populations into the formal economy.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The AI Frontier in Banking</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A core focus of the discussion was the growing role of <strong><a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/why-cambodia-is-using-artificial-intelligence-tourism/" type="link" id="https://orkunsantepheap.com/why-cambodia-is-using-artificial-intelligence-tourism/">Artificial Intelligence</a> (AI)</strong>. The NBC is currently pioneering an <strong>AI-based liquidity forecasting model</strong> in collaboration with JICA, aimed at making monetary policy more autonomous and data-driven. This world-first pilot for a central bank is expected to conclude its proof-of-concept phase by February 2026.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Economic Outlook: The &#8220;Two-Speed&#8221; Recovery</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the meeting hit a positive note regarding industrial exports and digital growth, both parties issued a note of caution regarding Cambodia&#8217;s &#8220;two-speed&#8221; economy.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><td><strong>Sector</strong></td><td><strong>Outlook</strong></td><td><strong>Key Driver</strong></td></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Manufacturing &amp; Exports</strong></td><td><strong>Bullish</strong></td><td>Tire exports ($1.4B) and diversified industrial goods.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Digital Finance</strong></td><td><strong>High Growth</strong></td><td>Bakong adoption and AI integration.</td></tr><tr><td><strong><a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-trust-sector-asset-protection-2026/" type="link" id="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-trust-sector-asset-protection-2026/">Real Estate</a> &amp; Construction</strong></td><td><strong>Subdued</strong></td><td>Slow return of international investment and high supply.</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AMRO highlighted that while <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-accelerates-green-industrial-growth-ahead-of-ldc-graduation/" type="link" id="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-accelerates-green-industrial-growth-ahead-of-ldc-graduation/">industrial growth</a> is robust, the <strong>real estate and construction sectors</strong>—historically the backbones of the GDP—have yet to regain their pre-pandemic momentum, posing a challenge for the broader domestic recovery in 2026.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="687" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/nbc-amro-meeting-ai-digital-finance-economic-outlook.jpg" alt="NBC Governor Chea Serey and AMRO Director Yasuto Watanabe during a high-level meeting in Phnom Penh." class="wp-image-3610" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/nbc-amro-meeting-ai-digital-finance-economic-outlook.jpg 1000w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/nbc-amro-meeting-ai-digital-finance-economic-outlook-300x206.jpg 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/nbc-amro-meeting-ai-digital-finance-economic-outlook-768x528.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">FAQ: NBC and AMRO Economic Summit</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>1. Who is AMRO and why does their opinion matter?</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) is the regional surveillance body for the 10 ASEAN nations plus China, Japan, and <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-south-korea-ties/" type="link" id="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-south-korea-ties/">South Korea</a>. They act as a &#8220;gym trainer&#8221; for economies, providing the data and policy advice needed to ensure financial stability.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>2. How is AI being used by the <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/nbc-debt-cancellation-fallen-disabled-soldiers/" type="link" id="https://orkunsantepheap.com/nbc-debt-cancellation-fallen-disabled-soldiers/">National Bank of Cambodia?</a></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The NBC is testing AI and machine learning to forecast &#8220;liquidity&#8221;—essentially predicting how much cash is flowing through the economy daily. This helps the bank make better decisions on interest rates and local currency management.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>3. Why is the construction sector struggling if the rest of the economy is growing?</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The construction sector is facing a &#8220;hangover&#8221; from oversupply and a slower-than-expected return of foreign buyers. While export-led manufacturing (like tires and garments) is booming, domestic property markets take longer to adjust.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>4. What does &#8220;financial inclusion&#8221; mean in this context?</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It refers to the ability of everyday Cambodians, including street vendors and rural farmers, to have a safe place to save money and a digital way to pay without needing a physical bank branch nearby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>5. Is the Khmer Riel becoming more popular?</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes. Through systems like Bakong and standardized KHQR codes, the NBC has made it easier and cheaper to pay in Riel, which is a key part of their long-term goal to reduce reliance on the US Dollar.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cambodia’s tourism landscape is hitting a tectonic shift in 2026. While Thailand historically dominated the Indian outbound travel market, recent cultural and heritage disputes at the border in late 2025 have triggered a massive psychological pivot. Millions of Indian travelers are now looking for alternatives. This movement, combined with Cambodia’s proactive diplomacy, has created a golden window for the Kingdom to establish itself as the premier &#8220;Home of Hindu Civilization&#8221; in Southeast Asia.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/indian-tourists-kolkata-direct-flight-angkor-wat.webp" alt=""/></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With expanded direct flight routes from <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/indian-tourists-kolkata-direct-flight-angkor-wat/"><strong>IndiGo</strong> and <strong>Cambodia Angkor Air</strong> now connecting New Delhi and Kolkata to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap</a>, physical barriers have vanished. To capitalize on this, Cambodia must evolve from a &#8220;stopover&#8221; into a primary destination.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are the five strategic pillars Cambodia must implement to capture and retain the Indian tourism market in 2026.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Leverage the &#8220;Civilizational Homecoming&#8221; Factor</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Indian interest in Cambodia is more than political—it is deeply spiritual. For many, visiting Cambodia is a &#8220;Civilizational Pilgrimage.&#8221; In 2026, Cambodia’s greatest competitive advantage over Thailand is its authenticity. Unlike commercialized temples found elsewhere, <strong>Angkor Wat</strong>, <strong>Preah Vihear</strong>, and <strong>Koh Ker</strong> represent the pinnacle of original Hindu-Buddhist architecture.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video aligncenter"><video height="1280" style="aspect-ratio: 720 / 1280;" width="720" controls src="https://orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Civilizational-Homecoming.mp4"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By framing our 2026 marketing around <strong>&#8220;Cambodia: Your Second Home of Vedic Heritage,&#8221;</strong> we tap into an emotional connection that Thai tourism cannot replicate. This sentiment is the primary driver behind the 300% projected growth in Indian arrivals this year.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Master Culinary Readiness: Indian-Friendly Dining</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The single biggest deterrent for Indian travelers is a lack of familiar food. Roughly 40% of the Indian population follows a strict vegetarian or &#8220;Jain&#8221; diet. If Cambodia wants to win this market, we must prioritize the plate.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/dal-tadka-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3211" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/dal-tadka-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/dal-tadka-300x225.jpg 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/dal-tadka-768x576.jpg 768w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/dal-tadka.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong><em>dal tadka</em></strong></figcaption></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Standardize Vegetarian Options:</strong> Hotels must move beyond a single &#8220;curry&#8221; option. Providing authentic staples like <em>Dal Tadka, Paneer Butter Masala,</em> and <em>Paratha</em> is essential for high guest satisfaction scores.</li>

<li><strong>Launch National Chef Training:</strong> Implementing a national initiative to train local chefs in Indian culinary techniques will yield immediate returns.</li>

<li><strong>Pursue Halal and Jain Certifications:</strong> Displaying recognized dietary certifications in dining halls builds instant trust with diverse Indian demographics.</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/paratha-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3212" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/paratha-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/paratha-300x200.jpg 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/paratha-768x512.jpg 768w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/paratha.avif 1248w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong><em>paratha</em></strong></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Bridge the Gap with Cultural Interpretation</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1184" height="864" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/How-Cambodia-Can-Win-the-Indian-Tourism-Market-in-2026.png" alt="" class="wp-image-3221" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/How-Cambodia-Can-Win-the-Indian-Tourism-Market-in-2026.png 1184w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/How-Cambodia-Can-Win-the-Indian-Tourism-Market-in-2026-300x219.png 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/How-Cambodia-Can-Win-the-Indian-Tourism-Market-in-2026-1024x747.png 1024w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/How-Cambodia-Can-Win-the-Indian-Tourism-Market-in-2026-768x560.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1184px) 100vw, 1184px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Indian tourists are highly inquisitive and value deep storytelling. In 2026, a tour guide’s value is measured by their ability to connect Khmer history with Indian epics.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>The Reamker-Ramayana Connection:</strong> Guides must bridge the narratives of the <em>Ramayana</em> and <em>Mahabharata</em> with the bas-reliefs of Angkor. This shared storytelling creates a profound psychological bond.</li>

<li><strong>The Hindi Advantage:</strong> While the Indian elite speak English, the booming middle-class segment values guides who can speak <strong>Hindi</strong>. A &#8220;Hindi for Tourism&#8221; certification will give Cambodian operators a significant edge over Thai competitors.</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-video aligncenter"><video height="1280" style="aspect-ratio: 720 / 1280;" width="720" controls src="https://orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/5-Keys-to-Attract-Indian-Tourists.mp4"></video></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Capture the High-Value &#8220;Destination Wedding&#8221; Market</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian wedding industry is a multi-billion dollar powerhouse. Historically, Phuket and Pattaya were the preferred locations. In 2026, Cambodia is positioned to claim this market.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Indian-tourists-in-Cambodia-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3060" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Indian-tourists-in-Cambodia-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Indian-tourists-in-Cambodia-300x225.jpg 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Indian-tourists-in-Cambodia-768x576.jpg 768w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Indian-tourists-in-Cambodia.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Promote Heritage Venues:</strong> Locations like <strong>Koh Rong</strong>, <strong>Dara Sakor</strong>, and the luxury estates of Siem Reap are perfect for the traditional 3-to-5-day Indian wedding.</li>

<li><strong>Streamline Incentive Policies:</strong> Under the <strong>Pentagonal Strategy – Phase 1</strong>, the government should simplify the temporary import of Indian décor, traditional attire, and specialized event staff. Making Cambodia the most &#8220;hassle-free&#8221; wedding destination in ASEAN will drive massive revenue.</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1022" height="676" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/indian-wedding-siem-reap-guide.jpg" alt="Royal Indian wedding Mandap with floral decor overlooking Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap Cambodia." class="wp-image-2946" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/indian-wedding-siem-reap-guide.jpg 1022w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/indian-wedding-siem-reap-guide-300x198.jpg 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/indian-wedding-siem-reap-guide-768x508.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Enable Seamless Mobility through Digital Integration</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="512" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments_cover-1024x512.jpg" alt="Countries That Support Cambodia’s KHQR Payments (2025)" class="wp-image-2938" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments_cover-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments_cover-300x150.jpg 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments_cover-768x384.jpg 768w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments_cover.jpg 1300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the digital-first world of 2026, convenience is the ultimate luxury. Cambodia must leverage its FinTech lead to make travel effortless.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Promote Bakong and KHQR:</strong> Encouraging Indian tourists to use the <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments/"><strong>Bakong</strong> system</a> for digital payments via <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/tag/khqr/">KHQR</a> reduces the friction of currency exchange.</li>

<li><strong>Optimize Express E-Visas:</strong> Strengthening the e-Visa portal and establishing &#8220;Express Lanes&#8221; for flights arriving from New Delhi and Kolkata will ensure a superior first-touch experience.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Conclusion: Building Peace through Hospitality</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Winning the Indian market is not just about leveraging a border dispute elsewhere; it is about demonstrating the warmth of <strong>Khmer Hospitality</strong>. True <strong>Santepheap</strong> (Financial Peace) for our tourism sector comes from building a diverse, stable, and respected market.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By focusing on these five pillars, Cambodia is doing more than just inviting tourists; it is welcoming civilizational brothers back to their second home.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">When 5G Meets Cambodia’s Cashless Ambitions</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the past decade, Cambodia has undergone a quiet but profound digital transformation. From a largely cash-based society, the country has rapidly embraced <strong>mobile payments</strong>, <strong>QR codes</strong>, and <strong>digital banking</strong>, driven by strong policy support from the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and high smartphone penetration. At the center of this shift are two key innovations: <strong>Bakong</strong>, Cambodia’s national payment system, and <strong>KHQR</strong>, the country’s unified QR code standard.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Countries-That-Support-Cambodias-KHQR-Payments-2025-1024x576.webp" alt=""/></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/cambodia-5g-official-launch-jan-2026/">Cambodia is entering another technological milestone: the <strong>5G era</strong></a>. Telecom operators have begun rolling out fifth-generation mobile networks promising faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity. This raises an important and timely question for consumers, businesses, and policymakers alike:</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Will 5G significantly boost mobile payments in Cambodia—particularly Bakong and KHQR—or will its impact be marginal?</strong></p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This article explores that question in depth. We examine how Bakong and <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/tag/khqr/">KHQR</a> work, why mobile network quality matters for digital payments, and how <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/tag/5g/">5G</a> could enhance (or fail to transform) Cambodia’s fintech ecosystem. Along the way, we analyze real-world use cases, cross-border payments, tourism, MSMEs, and the challenges that remain.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/cambodia-5g-official-launch-jan-2026.jpg" alt=""/></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Understanding Cambodia’s Mobile Payment Ecosystem</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Bakong: The Backbone of Digital Payments in Cambodia</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Launched by the <strong>National Bank of Cambodia (NBC)</strong>, <strong><a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/tag/bakong/">Bakong</a></strong> is Cambodia’s national digital payment system designed to modernize the country’s financial infrastructure and promote financial inclusion. Unlike private e-wallets, Bakong serves as a <strong>shared payment rail</strong> connecting banks, microfinance institutions, and payment service providers into a single interoperable network .</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Key characteristics of Bakong include:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Real-time transactions:</strong> Funds are transferred instantly between users.</li>

<li><strong>Blockchain-based infrastructure:</strong> Ensures transparency, traceability, and security.</li>

<li><strong>Multiple identifiers:</strong> Payments can be made using phone numbers, account IDs, or QR codes.</li>

<li><strong>Interoperability:</strong> Users can transfer funds across different banks and e-wallets without friction.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of Bakong’s most important achievements is reducing fragmentation in Cambodia’s financial system. Before Bakong, each bank or wallet operated largely in isolation. Today, users can send and receive money seamlessly across institutions, which has significantly accelerated digital payment adoption.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By 2024, Bakong had processed <strong>hundreds of millions of transactions annually</strong>, with total transaction value exceeding Cambodia’s GDP multiple times—a strong indicator of how deeply embedded it has become in daily economic life.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>KHQR: Cambodia’s Unified QR Code Standard</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments-1024x576.png" alt=""/></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While Bakong provides the underlying payment rails, <strong>KHQR</strong> is the user-facing innovation that most consumers and merchants interact with daily.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Introduced in 2022, KHQR is a <strong>national, EMV-compliant QR code standard</strong> developed by the NBC to unify QR payments across Cambodia .</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>What makes KHQR important?</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>One QR code, many apps:</strong> A single KHQR can be scanned by any participating bank or e-wallet app.</li>

<li><strong>Lower barriers for merchants:</strong> No need to display multiple QR codes for different providers.</li>

<li><strong>Reduced costs:</strong> Especially beneficial for small and informal businesses.</li>

<li><strong>Direct link to Bakong:</strong> Payments are settled in real time through the Bakong system.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From street vendors and cafés to supermarkets and hotels, KHQR has become a common sight across Cambodia. Its simplicity has played a major role in accelerating cashless payments, particularly among micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Network Quality Matters for Mobile Payments</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How Mobile Payments Actually Work</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To understand the potential impact of 5G, it helps to break down what happens during a typical QR payment:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>The customer opens a banking or wallet app.</li>

<li>The app connects to the internet to authenticate the user.</li>

<li>The QR code is scanned and payment details are fetched.</li>

<li>The transaction is sent to Bakong for real-time settlement.</li>

<li>Both payer and merchant receive confirmation.</li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each step depends on <strong>stable, low-latency mobile connectivity</strong>. Even small delays or brief disconnections can lead to failed payments, duplicated attempts, or customer frustration.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Limitations of 4G in High-Density Environments</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cambodia’s 4G network is generally sufficient for basic mobile payments. However, issues often arise in:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Busy markets</li>

<li>Shopping malls</li>

<li>Festivals and events</li>

<li>Tourist hotspots</li>

<li>Peak hours in urban centers</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In these environments, network congestion can slow down transaction confirmations. While a few seconds may seem trivial, repeated delays can erode trust—especially for first-time users or tourists unfamiliar with the system.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where <strong>5G’s technical advantages</strong> become relevant.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What 5G Brings to the Table</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_0071.jpeg" alt=""/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5G in Simple Terms</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Compared to 4G, 5G offers three core improvements:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Much higher speeds:</strong> Allowing data to move faster between devices and servers.</li>

<li><strong>Ultra-low latency:</strong> Reducing delays to near real-time.</li>

<li><strong>Greater network capacity:</strong> Supporting many more devices simultaneously.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While mobile payments do not require high bandwidth, they <strong>benefit significantly from low latency and network stability</strong>, particularly in high-traffic scenarios.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Does Bakong Need 5G to Function?</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The short answer: <strong>No.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bakong and KHQR already function well on 4G and even stable 3G connections. However, <strong>5G enhances performance rather than enabling basic functionality</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think of it as the difference between:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Payments that work most of the time, and</li>

<li>Payments that work instantly, reliably, and at scale.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How 5G Could Enhance Bakong and KHQR Payments</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Faster and More Reliable Transactions</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With 5G, users can expect:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Faster app loading times</li>

<li>Quicker QR code scanning</li>

<li>Near-instant transaction confirmation</li>

<li>Fewer failed or duplicated payments</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These improvements may seem incremental, but at scale, they significantly improve user experience—especially for merchants processing hundreds of transactions per day.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Supporting High-Volume Use Cases</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">5G is particularly valuable in <strong>high-density payment environments</strong>, such as:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Public transport hubs</li>

<li>Large retail chains</li>

<li>Stadiums and events</li>

<li>Tourist attractions</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In these scenarios, KHQR payments backed by 5G connectivity can maintain performance even when thousands of users are online simultaneously.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5G, KHQR, and Cross-Border Mobile Payments</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Tourism and International Wallet Integration</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most promising developments for KHQR is its <strong>integration with international payment platforms</strong>, including Alipay+ and regional e-wallets. This allows foreign tourists to pay Cambodian merchants using familiar apps while merchants receive funds through the Bakong system .</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For tourists, seamless mobile payments depend heavily on:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Reliable mobile data</li>

<li>Fast authentication</li>

<li>Instant confirmation</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">5G enhances all three, making Cambodia a more attractive destination for digital-savvy travelers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/cambodia-5g-economic-transformation-2026.jpg" alt=""/></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Strengthening Cambodia’s Regional Fintech Position</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Compared to neighboring countries, Cambodia stands out for its <strong>nationally coordinated payment infrastructure</strong>. While countries like Thailand and Vietnam also have QR standards, Cambodia’s tight integration between Bakong and KHQR gives it a unique advantage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">5G helps reinforce this position by ensuring the infrastructure can scale alongside regional and cross-border usage.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Impact on Businesses, MSMEs, and the Informal Economy</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Benefits for Merchants</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For merchants, especially small businesses, 5G-enhanced mobile payments offer:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Faster checkout times</li>

<li>Reduced cash handling risks</li>

<li>Lower operational costs</li>

<li>Better transaction records</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Street vendors and informal sellers—key pillars of Cambodia’s economy—benefit from being able to accept digital payments with minimal infrastructure.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Financial Inclusion and Rural Areas</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While 5G rollout initially focuses on urban centers, its long-term potential includes:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Improved service quality in semi-urban areas</li>

<li>Support for digital financial services in rural communities</li>

<li>Greater inclusion for underbanked populations</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, coverage gaps remain a significant challenge, and <strong>5G alone cannot solve issues of affordability or digital literacy</strong>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Challenges and Limitations: Is 5G a Silver Bullet?</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Coverage and Device Constraints</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Key limitations include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Uneven 5G coverage, especially outside major cities</li>

<li>Limited availability of affordable 5G smartphones</li>

<li>Continued reliance on 4G for most users in the near term</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Non-Technical Barriers</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even with perfect connectivity, adoption depends on:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>User trust in digital systems</li>

<li>Cybersecurity awareness</li>

<li>Financial and digital literacy</li>

<li>Clear consumer protection frameworks</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These factors often matter more than raw network speed.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Policy and Regulatory Perspective</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The National Bank of Cambodia has consistently emphasized that <strong>technology is only one part of digital finance development</strong>. Strong governance, interoperability, and consumer protection remain top priorities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">NBC’s long-term vision focuses on:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Expanding Bakong’s use cases</li>

<li>Strengthening cross-border payment links</li>

<li>Supporting innovation while maintaining financial stability.</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Future Outlook: What Comes Next for 5G and Mobile Payments in Cambodia</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking ahead, the combination of <strong>5G, Bakong, and KHQR</strong> could enable:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Smarter cities and IoT-based payments</li>

<li>Integrated super-app ecosystems</li>

<li>Real-time data analytics for businesses</li>

<li>Deeper regional payment connectivity</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As coverage expands and devices become more affordable, the benefits of 5G will become more visible across Cambodia’s digital economy.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Conclusion: Will 5G Truly Boost Bakong and KHQR?</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">5G is <strong>not a prerequisite</strong> for mobile payments in Cambodia—but it is a <strong>powerful accelerator</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bakong and KHQR already work well on existing networks. However, 5G enhances their <strong>speed, reliability, scalability, and cross-border usability</strong>, particularly in urban centers and high-volume environments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ultimately, the success of Cambodia’s mobile payment ecosystem will depend less on network speed alone and more on <strong>ecosystem maturity, user trust, affordability, and inclusive policy design</strong>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Call to Action</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cambodia’s fintech journey is far from over. Whether you are a consumer, business owner, investor, or policymaker, now is the time to <strong>embrace digital payments, explore Bakong and KHQR, and prepare for a more connected future powered by 5G</strong>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why KHQR Matters in 2025</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cambodia has quietly become one of Southeast Asia’s most progressive digital payment ecosystems. At the center of this transformation is <strong>KHQR</strong>, Cambodia’s national QR code payment standard powered by the <strong>Bakong National Payment System</strong>. What started as a domestic solution to unify banks and e-wallets has rapidly evolved into a <strong>cross-border payment network</strong> connecting Cambodia with major regional and global economies.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Countries-That-Support-Cambodias-KHQR-Payments-2025-1024x576.webp" alt="Countries That Support Cambodia’s KHQR Payments (2025)" class="wp-image-2939" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Countries-That-Support-Cambodias-KHQR-Payments-2025-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Countries-That-Support-Cambodias-KHQR-Payments-2025-300x169.webp 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Countries-That-Support-Cambodias-KHQR-Payments-2025-768x432.webp 768w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Countries-That-Support-Cambodias-KHQR-Payments-2025.webp 1400w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2025, KHQR is no longer just about scanning and paying inside Cambodia. It now enables <strong>international QR code payments</strong>, allowing tourists, businesses, and residents to transact seamlessly across borders without cash, cards, or complex currency exchange processes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This article provides the <strong>most up-to-date and comprehensive 2025 list of countries that support Cambodia’s KHQR payments</strong>, explains how the system works, and explores why <a href="https://bakong.nbc.gov.kh/download/KHQR/integration/KHQR%20SDK%20Document.pdf">KHQR</a> is becoming a model for digital payments in ASEAN and beyond.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you are:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A traveler planning a trip to Cambodia</li>

<li>A business owner accepting international payments</li>

<li>A fintech professional tracking regional interoperability</li>

<li>Or simply curious about Cambodia’s digital economy</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This guide will give you a clear, authoritative understanding of KHQR in 2025.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What Is KHQR and the Bakong Payment System?</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Understanding KHQR</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>KHQR</strong> is Cambodia’s standardized QR code payment framework introduced by the <strong>National Bank of Cambodia (NBC)</strong>. It allows users to make digital payments by scanning a QR code using mobile banking apps or e-wallets.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unlike fragmented QR systems in some countries, <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/tag/khqr/">KHQR</a> is <strong>fully interoperable</strong>, meaning:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>One QR code works across all participating banks and wallets</li>

<li>Merchants do not need multiple QR codes</li>

<li>Payments settle instantly and securely</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Bakong National Payment System</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">KHQR operates on <strong>Bakong</strong>, Cambodia’s blockchain-based national payment infrastructure launched by the National Bank of Cambodia.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Key features of <a href="https://bakong.nbc.gov.kh/en/">Bakong</a> include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Real-time payment settlement</li>

<li>High security and transparency</li>

<li>Integration with both banks and non-bank financial institutions</li>

<li>Support for Cambodian riel (KHR) and US dollars (USD)</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bakong acts as the <strong>backbone</strong> that enables KHQR to scale domestically and internationally.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Cambodia’s KHQR Is Gaining Global Attention</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many countries have QR payment systems, but few achieve cross-border interoperability at scale. KHQR stands out for several reasons:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Government-Led, Central Bank-Backed</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">KHQR is not a private fintech experiment. It is:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Regulated by the National Bank of Cambodia</li>

<li>Integrated into national financial policy</li>

<li>Aligned with ASEAN payment connectivity goals</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This gives it long-term stability and trust.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Designed for Cross-Border Use</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the beginning, Bakong and KHQR were built with <strong>international compatibility</strong> in mind, making regional integration faster than in many neighboring countries.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Inclusive by Design</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">KHQR supports:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Banked and underbanked users</li>

<li>Small merchants and street vendors</li>

<li>Domestic and foreign users</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This inclusivity accelerates adoption and network effects.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Active Countries Supporting Cambodia’s KHQR Payments (2025)</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments-1024x576.png" alt="Countries That Support Cambodia’s KHQR Payments (2025)" class="wp-image-2937" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments-1024x576.png 1024w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments-300x169.png 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments-768x432.png 768w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments-1536x864.png 1536w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/countries-support-cambodia-khqr-payments.png 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">KHQR’s early focus on <strong>cross-border scalability</strong> sets it apart.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Challenges and Limitations</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While KHQR has made impressive progress, challenges remain:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Not all countries support outbound payments yet</li>

<li>User awareness varies by market</li>

<li>Regulatory harmonization takes time</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, these are typical for rapidly expanding payment systems.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Future Outlook: What’s Next for KHQR?</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking ahead, KHQR is expected to:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Expand to more ASEAN countries</li>

<li>Deepen integration with global networks</li>

<li>Support e-commerce and remittances</li>

<li>Become a model for other developing economies</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cambodia’s success with KHQR may influence how other nations design national payment systems.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Which countries support Cambodia KHQR payments in 2025?</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Active countries include Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and China. Japan, India, and the Philippines are in pilot or MOU stages.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Can foreigners use KHQR in Cambodia?</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes. Foreign tourists can use supported QR payment apps from their home countries.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Is KHQR the same as Bakong?</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">KHQR is the QR standard, while Bakong is the underlying payment infrastructure.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Does KHQR support USD payments?</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes. KHQR supports both Cambodian riel (KHR) and US dollars (USD).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Conclusion: Why KHQR Is a Game Changer</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="488" src="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/KHQR-Payments-1024x488.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2941" srcset="https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/KHQR-Payments-1024x488.jpg 1024w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/KHQR-Payments-300x143.jpg 300w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/KHQR-Payments-768x366.jpg 768w, https://spcdn.shortpixel.ai/spio/ret_img,q_cdnize,to_auto,s_webp:avif/orkunsantepheap.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/KHQR-Payments.jpg 1108w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">KHQR is more than a payment method—it is a <strong>strategic financial infrastructure</strong> positioning Cambodia as a regional digital payment leader. With active cross-border support, strong central bank backing, and partnerships with global networks, KHQR demonstrates how a developing economy can leapfrog into the future of payments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As adoption grows and more countries join, KHQR is set to become one of Asia’s most influential QR payment ecosystems.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Singapore and Cambodia have taken a big step to improve how people pay for things across Southeast Asia (ASEAN). They have officially launched a system that allows people to make payments using a <strong>cross-border QR code link</strong> between Liquid Group&#8217;s <strong>RoamQR</strong> and Cambodia&#8217;s national digital payment system, <strong>Bakong</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The official launch event happened in Singapore on November 12, alongside the Singapore FinTech Festival 2025. The ceremony was led by important financial leaders, including <strong>H.E. Dr. Chea Serey</strong>, the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), and <strong>Mr. Sopnendu Mohanty</strong>, Group CEO of the Global Finance &amp; Technology Network (GFTN). Other senior representatives from the NBC, Liquid Group, ACLEDA Bank, and Phillip Bank were also there.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f4b0.png" alt="💰" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> How the New System Works</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Phase 1</strong> of this new system makes it easy for Cambodians:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Cambodian consumers and travelers</strong> can now pay at participating stores in Singapore by simply scanning a <strong>RoamQR code</strong>.</li>

<li>They use their mobile banking app, which is connected to <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/bakong-tourist-app/" title="Bakong">Bakong</a> and linked to their Cambodian Riel bank account.</li>

<li>This first phase is supported by two local banks, ACLEDA Bank and Phillip Bank.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the <strong>future</strong>, the system will work the other way too:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Singaporean consumers and travelers</strong> will be able to scan the Cambodian QR code (<strong>KHQR</strong>) in Cambodia.</li>

<li>Their payments will be taken directly from their preferred Singapore mobile payment apps, making the process easy for everyone.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This creates a safe, modern, and simple <strong>two-way digital payment system</strong> that connects both countries.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <em><a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/fastest-cheapest-ways-send-money-cambodia-2025/" title="Fastest and Cheapest Ways to Send Money To and From Cambodia">Fastest and Cheapest Ways to Send Money To and From Cambodia</a></em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f4c8.png" alt="📈" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Why This Matters</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By expanding digital channels like Bakong, the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) is making <a href="https://orkunsantepheap.com/fintech-cambodia-2025/" title="digital payments">digital payments</a> safer, more transparent, and accessible to more people across the country.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, NBC Governor, said:</strong></p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This event is a major move toward better economic connection between our two nations and greater teamwork in the region. Cambodia has already successfully linked its QR code system with Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, China, and Japan. By adding Singapore, we are opening up new opportunities for our people, businesses, and economies. Together, we are taking a big stride toward better digital finance across ASEAN and the world.”</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and TenPay Global have signed an agreement (called a Memorandum of Understanding or MoU) to work together on <strong>financial development</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main goal is to create a way for Cambodia&#8217;s national payment system, <strong>Bakong (using KHQR codes)</strong>, to work directly with China&#8217;s popular mobile payment network, <strong>Weixin Pay</strong>. This will make it much easier for people in both countries to pay each other digitally.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The agreement was signed by <strong>H.E. Dr. Chea Serey</strong>, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, and <strong>Mr. Daniel Hong</strong>, Vice President of Tencent Financial Technology (Tencent is the company that owns TenPay Global). The signing took place on November 12 during the Singapore FinTech Festival 2025.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f91d.png" alt="🤝" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> What the Collaboration Will Achieve</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This partnership is designed to make digital payments between Cambodia and China faster, more common, and more effective.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The two parties will work together to:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Develop the financial sector.</strong></li>

<li><strong>Connect cross-border payments</strong> (meaning you can use your payment app from one country to pay in the other).</li>

<li><strong>Improve remittances</strong> (making it easier and faster to send money back and forth between the two countries).</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2728.png" alt="✨" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Benefits of the New System</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>NBC Governor H.E. Dr. Chea Serey said</strong> this agreement is a huge step forward for linking cross-border payments and encouraging new financial innovations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She highlighted that the collaboration will:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Make financial services more accessible to everyone.</li>

<li>Improve how quickly and efficiently payments are made.</li>

<li>Promote the use of local currencies in transactions.</li>

<li>Support the shift to digital technology and boost trade between Cambodia and China.</li>
</ul>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;By using advanced digital payment tools, we can offer real benefits to shoppers, businesses, and travelers, making financial transactions simpler, safer, and more effective,&#8221; she stated.</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Mr. Daniel Hong of Tencent Financial Technology added</strong> that connecting global payment wallets relies on both new technology and continuous teamwork.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;By working with global partners, we are making it possible for users to confidently use their home payment wallets anywhere in the world, just as they would at home. This helps us build a reliable and connected payment system that truly benefits consumers and creates new possibilities for global trade.&#8221;</p>
