What the Grab app does
On mobile, Grab started as a ride-hailing app (taxis, private cars, motorbikes) and grew into a multipurpose “everyday everything” app. Within a single app, users can:
-
Book rides between locations (“Rides”, “GrabBike”, etc.)
-
Order food via GrabFood and groceries/essentials via GrabMart
-
Send parcels and documents with GrabExpress
-
Pay in-app or at merchants using GrabPay, and sometimes defer payments via PayLater
This “all-in-one” design aims to keep users inside one ecosystem for daily transport, shopping, and payments.
Business model and ecosystem role
For ride-hailing and deliveries, Grab operates a platform marketplace: independent driver-partners and couriers accept jobs from consumers, while Grab takes a commission per transaction. Restaurants, shops, and other merchants list on the app to reach Grab’s user base.
Over time, Grab built out fintech services—wallet, QR payments, credit, insurance, and even a digital bank—turning mobility and delivery usage into an entry point for broader financial inclusion in a largely mobile-first region.
History and expansion
The app launched in 2012 as MyTeksi to improve taxi safety in Malaysia, then rebranded to Grab as it expanded regionally and added private cars, motorbikes, and courier services. In 2018, it acquired Uber’s Southeast Asia operations, significantly boosting its user base and enabling the rapid growth of GrabFood. Grab later listed on the NASDAQ in 2021 via a high-profile SPAC merger.
