Making the Mekong Region Connected and Green🤝

On November 11th, senior government leaders from six countries—China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam—met in Kunming for a second workshop. The topic was developing the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Innovation Corridor.

The officials confirmed their shared goal: they want the sub-region to be connected digitally and environmentally friendly (green).

According to a press release from Cambodia’s Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI), the main goal of the meeting was to work together more closely on science, technology, and new ideas (innovation). This cooperation is meant to create growth across the Mekong region that is sustainable, includes everyone, and produces less carbon pollution.

A major decision made at the meeting was the promise to improve cooperation on sharing data across borders. They agreed that letting data flow freely between countries is essential for improving trade, transportation (logistics), and the shift to digital systems.

H.E. Dr. Try Sophal, a Director General from Cambodia’s MISTI, spoke at the event. He said, “The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation today is not just a regional group, but a powerful driving force for shared and lasting success. The Innovation Corridor is a forward-looking plan that must be strongly built on the foundations of science, technology, and new ideas.”

He also emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to environmentally friendly growth. He noted that using green technology and building sustainable industries are key priorities for the country.

The Cambodian team suggested two concrete actions:

1. Creating an LMC Task Force to push forward a plan for exchanging green technology.
2. Starting a joint research program in 2026 focused on green technology and digital innovation.
