Cambodia’s trade with the rest of the world is booming. According to a new report from the Customs Department released on May 11, the country’s total trade reached over $23 billion in the first four months of 2026. This is a nearly 20% increase compared to the same time last year.

The Numbers at a Glance

From January to April:

Exports (Selling to other countries): Cambodia sold $11.12 billion worth of goods, up by almost 24%.

Imports (Buying from other countries): Cambodia bought $12.26 billion worth of goods, an increase of about 18%.

Our biggest customers continue to be the United States, Vietnam, Japan, and China.

Why is Trade Growing?

Experts point to two main reasons for this success:

Better Trade Deals: H.E. Penn Sovicheat from the Ministry of Commerce explained that Cambodia has signed several regional and international agreements. These deals make it cheaper and easier for other countries to buy Cambodian products by lowering taxes (tariffs).

A Strong Manufacturing Sector: Despite a shaky global economy, Cambodia’s factories remain busy. Anthony Galliano, a leading investment expert, noted that while clothes, shoes, and travel bags are still our top sellers, the country is getting better at making new things like electronics, car parts, and tires.

What Are We Trading?

Main Exports: Mostly clothing, footwear, travel bags, electronics, bicycles, tires, and farm products.

Main Imports: Mostly raw materials used in factories, fuel (petrol), vehicles, and electronic devices.

FAQ: Understanding Cambodia’s Trade

1. What does “International Trade” actually mean? It is simply the total value of everything Cambodia sells to other countries (exports) plus everything it buys from them (imports).

2. Why is an increase in exports good for the average person? When exports go up, it usually means factories are busy and farms are productive. This helps create more jobs and brings more money into the local economy.

3. What is a “Trade Agreement”? Think of it as a “friendship deal” between two or more countries. They agree to reduce or remove extra taxes on goods they sell to each other, making products cheaper and more competitive.

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s small business lending sector maintained a trajectory of moderate growth in early 2026, reaching a total outstanding balance of $37.44 billion. According to the latest report from Credit Bureau Cambodia (CBC) released on May 7, the sector saw a 0.9% increase in loan balances during the first quarter, even as the market showed signs of consolidation.

Market Dynamics: Working Capital and Agriculture

The report highlights that while the total number of loan accounts dipped slightly by 1.5% to 1.74 million, the volume of capital being injected into the economy remains substantial.

Dominance of Working Capital: Loans for daily operations continue to be the primary driver, accounting for 64.6% of all outstanding balances.

Agricultural Support: Farming and agribusiness loans remain a critical pillar, representing 28.2% of all loan accounts nationwide.

Monitoring Credit Quality

Despite the growth in volume, the report flagged a rise in the 90+ Days Past Due (DPD) ratio, which climbed to 7.7% from 7.1% in the previous quarter. This uptick in overdue loans has put a spotlight on the National Bank of Cambodia’s (NBC) proactive supervisory measures.

H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the NBC, recently reinforced that the resilience of the banking system is no accident. She attributed this stability to years of rigorous prudential regulations, including:

Capital Adequacy Requirements: Ensuring banks hold enough capital to weather economic shocks.

Forward-Looking Supervision: Shifting toward identifying risks before they materialize.

Risk-Based Oversight: Strengthening on-site inspections to safeguard the deposits of the public.

The Analyst’s View: Quality Over Quantity

Ms. Sreyneath Meas, a regional market and policy analyst at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), suggests that the current slowdown in account numbers may actually be a healthy sign.

“The 1.5% decline in account numbers, paired with a rise in total balance, suggests that lenders are becoming more selective, focusing on larger, more viable businesses. While the rise in the 90+ DPD ratio to 7.7% bears watching, it remains manageable thanks to the NBC’s stringent liquidity standards. For 2026, the focus for Cambodian banks isn’t just about lending more; it’s about lending smarter, especially as they begin to align with the new Sustainable Finance Taxonomy,” Ms. Meas analyzed.

FAQ: Small Business Lending 2026

Q: Why are “Working Capital” loans so dominant in Cambodia? A: Small businesses often face fluctuating cash flows. Working capital loans allow them to buy inventory, pay staff, and bridge the gap between sales and expenses, making them the most essential tool for SME survival.

Q: Does the 7.7% overdue ratio mean the banking sector is in trouble? A: No. While it is an increase, the NBC has high capital buffers and liquidity requirements in place. The central bank’s “Forward-Looking” approach is designed to manage these risks and prevent them from affecting overall financial stability.

Q: How does this report affect someone looking for a new business loan? A: Banks are likely to be more thorough in their risk assessments. Businesses with strong financial records and those aligning with “Green” or “Sustainable” practices (as per the new Taxonomy) may find more favorable terms.

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s investment landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, moving from traditional low-cost manufacturing toward a high-tech industrial hub. During the Cambodia Investment Forum 2026 held yesterday, H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the CDC, revealed that the Kingdom has approved 184 new investment projects totaling $2.6 billion from January to April 2026.

The Rise of High-Tech Special Economic Zones (SEZs)

A key driver behind this $2.6 billion influx is the strategic evolution of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). According to the Deputy Prime Minister, SEZs are no longer just for garments and footwear; they have become magnets for “sophisticated sectors.”

“The growth we are witnessing is a testament to the success of our SEZs in drawing new investments, with a significant shift toward electronic components and high-tech industries,” H.E. Sun Chanthol stated. This transition is vital for Cambodia’s ambition to climb the global value chain and diversify its economic pillars.

Resilience Through Strategic Partnership

Under the theme “Beyond Investment: Strengthening Resilience Through Proactive Aftercare and Strategic Partnership,” the forum highlighted that attracting capital is only the first step. The Royal Government is now focusing on:

Proactive Aftercare: Ensuring existing investors have the support needed to expand and sustain operations.

Infrastructure Synergy: Aligning physical infrastructure with industrial needs to reduce logistics costs.

Proactive Reforms: Continuing to streamline administrative processes to maintain a competitive business climate.

This momentum follows a record-breaking 2025, where Cambodia approved 630 projects worth a total of $10 billion, proving that the Kingdom’s economic stability remains a top draw for international capital.

The Analyst’s View: Beyond the Numbers

Ms. Sreyneath Meas, a regional market and policy analyst at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), observes that the quality of investment is just as important as the quantity.

“The $2.6 billion figure is impressive, but the real story lies in the ‘Electronic Components’ sector. This indicates that Cambodia is successfully competing for the ‘China Plus One’ strategy. By attracting high-tech firms into SEZs, Cambodia is building a more resilient economy that is less vulnerable to global shifts in the garment trade. The focus on ‘Aftercare’ mentioned by H.E. Sun Chanthol is a mature policy shift that will likely encourage long-term reinvestment,” Ms. Meas analyzed.

FAQ: Cambodia’s Investment Climate 2026

Q: Why is the shift to electronics and high-tech significant? A: High-tech industries generally offer higher wages and better skill transfer for Cambodian workers. It also makes the national economy more stable by diversifying exports beyond the traditional garment and agriculture sectors.

Q: What is the “Proactive Aftercare” mentioned at the forum? A: It refers to a government strategy where the CDC doesn’t just “approve and leave.” Instead, they actively work with investors to solve operational issues, helping them grow and stay in Cambodia for the long term.

Q: How does this compare to last year’s performance? A: In 2025, Cambodia averaged about $833 million in approved investments per month. The first four months of 2026 are maintaining a similar pace (approx. $650 million/month), which is a strong signal of consistency despite global economic fluctuations.

PHNOM PENH — Koh Rong, one of Cambodia’s most celebrated island destinations, has been named among the World’s 50 Best Beaches for 2026, securing the 9th position on the prestigious global list.

The ranking places Koh Rong ahead of Thailand’s well‑known Donald Duck Bay and just behind Dhigurah in the Maldives and Playa Balandra in Mexico — a testament to the Kingdom’s growing reputation as a premier beach destination in Southeast Asia.

Quick Facts: Koh Rong Beach

Item

Detail

Rank

9th in World’s 50 Best Beaches 2026

Location

Koh Rong island, Sihanoukville province, Cambodia

Known for

White sand, clear shallow water, limited development, tranquil atmosphere

Nearby attractions

Snorkelling, diving, bioluminescent plankton, jungle trekking

Access

Ferry from Sihanoukville (45–90 minutes)

What Makes Koh Rong Beach Special

According to World’s 50 Best Beaches, the beach on Koh Rong is renowned for its long stretch of powdery white sand and clear, shallow waters. Unlike many overdeveloped tourist hotspots in the region, Koh Rong’s limited development helps preserve a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.

The beach features expansive sandy areas, some flanked by lush tropical greenery, offering visitors a sense of seclusion and natural beauty. Its size, clean water, and uncrowded setting make it stand out from busier destinations such as Thailand’s Phi Phi Islands or Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay.

“Koh Rong’s unspoiled character and tranquil environment are exactly what today’s travelers are seeking,” a spokesperson for World’s 50 Best Beaches noted in the listing.

The 2026 Top 10 Global Beach Rankings

Rank

Beach

Location

1

Entalula Beach

Philippines

2

Fteri Beach

Greece

3

Wharton Beach

Australia

4

Nosy Iranja

Madagascar

5

East Beach (Vomo Island)

Fiji

6

Shoal Bay East

Anguilla

7

Dhigurah

Maldives

8

Playa Balandra

Mexico

9

Koh Rong Beach

Cambodia

10

Donald Duck Bay

Thailand

A Boost for Cambodia’s Post‑Pandemic Tourism Recovery

The recognition comes at a critical time for Cambodia’s tourism sector, which has been steadily recovering from global travel disruptions. Koh Rong, located about 25 kilometres off the coast of Sihanoukville, has long been a favourite among backpackers and luxury travellers alike. The island offers a mix of budget guesthouses and eco‑friendly resorts, with activities ranging from snorkelling and diving to bioluminescent plankton viewing at night.

Mr. Chhay Sivlin, President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), welcomed the ranking as a major marketing victory.

“This international recognition puts Cambodia’s beaches on the global map. Koh Rong’s 9th place ranking will undoubtedly attract more discerning travellers looking for authentic, unspoiled coastal experiences. It also encourages responsible tourism development,” she said.

What’s Next for Koh Rong?

Local authorities and tourism stakeholders are expected to use the ranking to promote the island as a world‑class beach destination while maintaining environmental safeguards. The Ministry of Tourism has previously issued guidelines for sustainable development on Koh Rong, including restrictions on single‑use plastics and regulations on coastal construction.

The government hopes that such international accolades will help Cambodia achieve its target of attracting more than 7 million international visitors annually by 2027.

For those who value local expertise combined with modern digital convenience, Vattanac Bank offers a compelling proposition. As a 100% Cambodian‑owned bank and an integral part of the prestigious Vattanac Group – developer of Phnom Penh’s iconic Vattanac Capital – the bank blends deep local roots with an ambitious vision for the future. From its “Phygital” (physical + digital) strategy that merges the warmth of in‑person service with cutting‑edge technology, to its expansion across the nation, Vattanac Bank has established itself as a trusted financial partner for individuals, SMEs, and large corporations.

By 2024, it operated 38 branches across 22 provinces – 14 in Phnom Penh and 24 in the provinces.
“Block Now” – Industry‑First Security Feature

In August 2025, Vattanac Bank launched Block Now, a Cambodia‑first feature that allows customers to instantly block all outgoing fund transfers from their accounts and cards if they suspect fraud or their data has been compromised. This puts control directly into the customer’s hands, ensuring protection anytime, anywhere.

First Account (Digital Onboarding)

Cambodian citizens aged 15+ with a valid National ID card can open a “First Account” entirely through the VB App in just a few minutes.

Limits:

User Reviews

The VB App has received positive feedback for its convenience, fast transfers, and modern design. One Google Play user commented: “Very convenient and useful app. I like it very much. Highly recommend all of you guys to use this app. More secure, fast with nice design platform and various features”. On expat forums, one user noted the VB App is “probably as good as ABA’s one” and highlighted that SWIFT transfers take “under an hour these days”.

Vattanac Bank embodies a unique combination – Cambodian‑owned yet globally ambitious; steeped in tradition yet digitally progressive; local in warmth yet security‑first in approach. For locals, it offers an accessible entry point into modern banking (from a US$ 10 savings account to sophisticated corporate lending). For expats, it’s a reliable partner for home loans and everyday banking, though increased foreigner‑friendly digital onboarding would enhance its appeal.

The bank’s award‑winning VB App, industry‑first “Block Now” security feature, and continued branch expansion across 22 provinces underscore a genuine commitment to both innovation and accessibility. While international transfer fees currently require a branch visit to clarify, an updated public schedule would be welcomed by frequent international senders.

For anyone seeking a stable, 100% Cambodian financial partner with a growing digital footprint and a clear vision for the future, Vattanac Bank remains a top contender in the Kingdom’s rapidly evolving banking landscape.

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple has been ranked as the second most attractive tourist destination in Asia for 2026, according to TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel guidance platform.

The ranking places the 12th‑century temple complex among the top 25 best tourism sites in Asia, reaffirming its enduring global appeal as international visitor numbers continue to rebound.

Quick Facts: Angkor Wat in 2026

Item

Detail

TripAdvisor ranking

No. 2 in Asia (Top 25)

Visitors (Jan–Apr 2026)

322,004

Ticket revenue (Jan–Apr 2026)

US$15,497,338

Contribution to Kunthea Bopha Fund

US$644,008

UNESCO inscription

1992

Claim to fame

Largest religious monument in the world

Strong Revenue and Visitor Numbers

Data released by Angkor Enterprise for the first four months of 2026 (January to April) shows that ticket sales to international tourists generated US$15,497,338, with 322,004 foreign visitors purchasing entry passes to the Angkor Archaeological Park.

During the same period, Angkor Enterprise contributed US$644,008 to the Kunthea Bopha Children’s Foundation, a social fund that supports pediatric healthcare in Cambodia.

A Monument of Global Significance

According to historians, Angkor Wat was built during the reign of King Suryavarman II (1113–1150 AD) as a funerary temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. It is widely recognised as the largest religious monument in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992.

The temple’s intricate bas‑reliefs, towering central spire, and moated enclosure continue to draw millions of visitors from across the globe each year.

Analyst’s View

Tourism analyst Sok Narith described the TripAdvisor ranking as “a powerful endorsement of Angkor’s timeless appeal.”

He noted that the ranking comes at a crucial time as Cambodia’s tourism sector recovers from global disruptions. “Being placed second in all of Asia sends a strong signal to international travelers that Angkor remains a must‑see destination. It also presents an opportunity to further promote cultural tourism beyond the temple complex,” he said.

Outlook

With the high season for Cambodian tourism typically running from November to February, the strong performance in the first four months of 2026 suggests a robust year ahead. The Royal Government of Cambodia has been investing in infrastructure, digital ticketing, and visitor experience improvements to sustain the recovery.

Tucked along the mighty Mekong River in northeastern Cambodia, Kratie (pronounced “kra‑cheh”) offers a glimpse of old Indochina – where French colonial villas line sleepy boulevards, and the Mekong’s turquoise waters hide one of the world’s rarest freshwater mammals: the Irrawaddy dolphin. For travellers seeking a quieter, more authentic Cambodian experience away from the crowds, Kratie is a hidden gem.

This guide covers everything you need to know for a memorable trip in 2026: how to get there, dolphin watching, island homestays, colonial architecture, where to eat and stay, budget tips, and practical advice.

Quick Overview

Item

Details

Location

Northeastern Cambodia, 360 km from Phnom Penh (6–7 hours by road)

Best time to visit

November – February (dry, cool); March – May (hot); June – October (rainy, green)

Recommended stay

1–2 days

Daily budget (budget)

$20–30

Daily budget (mid‑range)

$40–60

Main attractions

Irrawaddy dolphin watching at Kampi pool, Koh Trong island, Phnom Srey & Phnom Pros, colonial architecture, 100‑column pagoda

Famous for

Mekong dolphins, French colonial heritage, riverine lifestyle

How to Get to Kratie

From Phnom Penh

Mode

Duration

Cost (USD)

Notes

Bus

6–7 hours

$10–15

Virak Buntham, Larryta, Sorya – multiple daily departures

Private taxi

5–6 hours

$50–70

Comfortable, flexible, good for groups

Share taxi

6–7 hours

$12–18

Leaves from Phnom Penh’s Psar Daeum Kor area

From Siem Reap

Bus + transfer: Siem Reap – Kompong Thom – Kratie (8–9 hours). Not direct; consider breaking the journey in Kompong Thom or Phnom Penh.

From Mondulkiri / Sen Monorom

Road via Route 76 and 73; bus or shared taxi (4–5 hours). The scenery is spectacular – rolling hills and dense forests.

Tip: Overnight buses are available from Phnom Penh, saving a night’s accommodation and allowing you to arrive in Kratie early in the morning when dolphins are most active.

Top Things to Do in Kratie

1. Watch Irrawaddy Dolphins at Kampi Pool

The Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is a critically endangered species, and Kratie is one of the last places on Earth where you can reliably see them in the wild. The best spot is Kampi pool, a deep stretch of the Mekong about 15 km north of Kratie town.

Location: Kampi village, 15 km north of Kratie town.

Best time to see dolphins: 6:30–8:30 AM and 3:30–5:00 PM – they are most active in the cooler hours. Avoid midday.

Boat hire: A small wooden boat can be rented for a 45–60 minute tour. Cost: $9–10 per boat (seats up to 4–5 people). You can share with other travellers to split the cost.

What to expect: The dolphins surface for a few seconds to breathe. Be patient and quiet – they are shy. You may also see them feeding or playing near the boats.

Pro tip: Bring binoculars and a camera with a good zoom lens. The dolphins rarely surface close to the boat.

2. Koh Trong Island – A Step Back in Time

Koh Trong is a large, fertile island in the middle of the Mekong, directly opposite Kratie town. The island has no motor vehicles – only bicycles, walking paths, and buffalo carts – making it a tranquil escape.

Getting there: Ferry from Kratie’s main pier ($1–2 return, 10 minutes). Ferries run from early morning until late afternoon.

Getting around: Rent a bicycle (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><semantics><mrow><mn>2</mn><mtext>–</mtext><mn>3</mn><mi mathvariant="normal">/</mi><mi>d</mi><mi>a</mi><mi>y</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mi>o</mi><mi>r</mi><mi>h</mi><mi>i</mi><mi>r</mi><mi>e</mi><mi>a</mi><mi>b</mi><mi>u</mi><mi>f</mi><mi>f</mi><mi>a</mi><mi>l</mi><mi>o</mi><mi>c</mi><mi>a</mi><mi>r</mi><mi>t</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo></mrow></semantics></math>2–3/day)orhireabuffalocart(5–8 for a tour).

What to see:

Orchard tours: Sample local fruits like pomelo, durian, and rambutan (seasonal).

Silk weaving villages: Watch traditional loom weaving.

Old French villas (abandoned, for photography).

Communal house – a beautiful wooden structure.

Accommodation: Several homestays offer overnight stays ($10–20 per night, meals extra). Waking up on the island is magical.

Time needed: 3–5 hours or overnight.

3. Kratie Town’s Colonial Architecture

Kratie town escaped much of the wartime destruction, leaving behind a wonderful collection of French colonial buildings along the riverfront and main streets. Take a self‑guided walking tour.

Where to look: Riverside street (Street 1), streets leading up to the central market.

Notable buildings: The old Governor’s residence, several shophouses with ornate balconies, and the 100‑column pagoda (Wat Sarsar Moi Roy) – actually has only 60 columns, but the name stuck.

Best time: Early morning or late afternoon for soft light and cooler temperatures.

4. Phnom Srey & Phnom Pros (Woman Hill & Man Hill)

Two small hills about 4 km from Kratie town offer a short hike and panoramic views of the Mekong and surrounding countryside.

Legend: According to local lore, a contest between women and men to build a pagoda on their respective hills; the women were tricked, leading to the separation of the two hills.

View: Climb to the top for a 360‑degree view of the Mekong, islands, and rice paddies.

Entry fee: Free or small donation.

Time needed: 1–1.5 hours.

5. Kampi Forest (Gibbon & Monkey Spotting)

Near the dolphin pool, you can explore the Kampi forest where you might spot wild gibbons and monkeys. There are short walking trails.

Best time: Early morning (6–7 AM) when gibbons are most vocal.

Entry fee: Free (donations welcome for local guides).

Time needed: 30–60 minutes.

6. Mekong River Sunset Cruise

Sun & rain protection: Sunscreen, hat, insect repellent (especially on the island), and a rain jacket (rainy season).

Cash is king: ATMs are available in Kratie town (ABA, ACLEDA). However, smaller villages, the dolphin pool, and Koh Trong island accept only cash.

Dolphin etiquette: Do not touch or feed the dolphins. Stay seated in the boat. Avoid loud noises.

How many days do I need in Kratie?
1–2 days is sufficient. One day for dolphin watching + Koh Trong island; a second day for Phnom Srey/Pros and relaxing by the river.

When is the best time to see dolphins?
Early morning (6:30–8:30 AM) or late afternoon (3:30–5:00 PM). Avoid midday when they rest in deeper water.

Is Koh Trong island worth visiting?
Absolutely. It’s a peaceful step back in time. The homestays are simple but comfortable, and cycling around the island is delightful.

Can I swim with dolphins in Kratie?
No. The Irrawaddy dolphins are wild and endangered; swimming is strictly prohibited. You can only watch from the boat.

What language do they speak in Kratie?
Khmer. Basic English is spoken in tourist areas (hotels, restaurants, dolphin boat operators). Learning a few Khmer words is appreciated.

Are there direct flights to Kratie?
No. The nearest airport is in Phnom Penh. All travel to Kratie is by road.

Disclaimer

Travel conditions, prices, and schedules may change. This guide is based on information available in May 2026. Always verify with local operators and official sources before traveling.

Final Thoughts

Kratie is a serene, soulful destination that rewards slow travel. The chance to see rare Irrawaddy dolphins in the wild is unforgettable, but the island’s rural charm, colonial architecture, and the gentle rhythm of the Mekong are equally compelling. For travellers seeking an authentic Cambodia – beyond the temples and crowds – Kratie is a must‑visit.

Bank policies, fees, interest rates, and product offerings may change without notice. This review is based on information available in May 2026. Always verify with BRED Bank Cambodia’s official website or a branch before making financial decisions. This article does not constitute financial advice.

BRED Bank Cambodia occupies a unique position as the only European Union bank in the Kingdom. For French‑speaking expats, European business owners, and anyone seeking international banking standards without leaving Cambodia, BRED is an excellent option.

Its strong relationship management model, competitive car loan rates, multi‑currency account options, and preferential international transfer rates (especially for World Package customers) are genuine advantages over purely local competitors. The bank’s 15‑branch network is sufficient for Phnom Penh‑based customers, but those in remote provinces may find coverage limited.

While the mobile app has some usability issues that need improvement, BRED’s core value proposition – European banking expertise delivered locally – remains compelling. For expats who value French language support, international connectivity, and a relationship‑driven banking experience, BRED Bank is a brand worth serious consideration.

For decades, Cambodia has been a leading exporter of raw agricultural commodities – cashew nuts, rice, rubber, and cassava – sending most of them to neighbouring countries for processing. But that is changing fast. A new wave of investment, supported by government policy and growing international demand for processed food products, is transforming Cambodia from a raw commodity supplier into a regional agro‑processing hub.

This article analyses the drivers behind Cambodia’s agro‑processing boom, highlights recent investments, and identifies key opportunities for foreign and local investors.

Quick Overview: Cambodia’s Agro‑Processing Potential

Indicator

Value / Trend

Total agricultural exports (2025)

Over 10 million tonnes

Raw cashew nut exports (2025)

~US$1.5 billion (98% exported raw to Vietnam)

National processing target (cashew)

25% by 2027, 50% by 2032

Rice milled exports (Q1 2026)

361,578 tonnes (US$207.5 million)

Rubber exports (2025)

US$2.06 billion (+37% yoy)

Government incentives

QIP status (tax holidays, duty‑free equipment imports)

Recent FDI in agro‑processing

US$5 million Korean cashew plant (Kampong Thom)

From Raw Exports to High‑Value Processing

Cambodia’s agricultural sector has long been a pillar of the economy. However, the vast majority of its production has been exported in raw or minimally processed form, leaving the higher‑value processing and branding to other countries.

Cashew nuts: Cambodia is the world’s second‑largest producer of raw cashew nuts (RCN), yet over 90% of its crop is exported untreated to Vietnam, where it is processed, roasted, packaged, and re‑exported to global markets. In 2025, RCN exports earned approximately US$1.5 billion – but had those nuts been processed domestically, the value captured could have been double or triple.

Rice: While Cambodia exports fragrant rice (Phka Romduol) under its own brand, much of its paddy rice is still traded across the border unprocessed. The government has been actively promoting milling and packaging facilities to increase local value addition.

Rubber: Natural rubber is a major export earner (US$2.06 billion in 2025), but the downstream industry – tyre manufacturing, rubber gloves, and other rubber products – is still in its infancy. Several tyre factories have already been established in Svay Rieng and Sihanoukville, creating new demand for locally processed rubber.

The agro‑processing push is therefore not just a policy aspiration; it is a direct response to the immense value leakage from raw commodity exports.

The Policy Push: National Targets & Incentives

Cashew Processing Targets

In 2024, the Cambodian government approved a National Policy on Cashew Nuts 2022–2027, which sets ambitious domestic processing targets: 25% by 2027 and 50% by 2032. To achieve these goals, the government is offering:

QIP (Qualified Investment Project) status for new processing plants, providing tax holidays of 3–9 years, duty‑free imports of machinery, and VAT exemptions.

Access to low‑interest loans through the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank (ARDB) and development partners.

Technical assistance for quality certification (GlobalGAP, organic, fair trade).

Agricultural Development Policies

The government’s Pentagonal Strategy – Phase I prioritises agricultural modernisation, including support for contract farming, post‑harvest infrastructure (cold storage, drying facilities), and export diversification. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has also signed multiple MoUs with international buyers to secure offtake agreements for processed products.

Investment Incentives under the Law on Investment

Agro‑processing projects can apply for QIP status through the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC). Benefits include:

Tax holidays (3–9 years) plus an optional 3‑year extension for certain sectors.

Duty‑free import of machinery, equipment, and raw materials used in production.

VAT exemption on local purchases of production inputs.

Special depreciation options for capital intensive projects.

Recent Investments: A Pipeline of Processing Projects

Korean Cashew Processing Plant in Kampong Thom

In early 2026, a consortium of Korean investors committed US$5 million to build a new cashew processing facility in Kampong Thom province. The plant is expected to begin construction in late 2026 and will process raw cashews into kernels for export to South Korea, Japan, and Europe. The project is a direct result of Cambodia’s policy incentives and the growing demand for traceable, high‑quality processed cashews.

Existing & Planned Rice Mills

Cambodia already has over 200 rice mills, but many are small and lack modern processing technology. Several large‑scale, export‑oriented mills have been established under QIP status, producing premium fragrant rice for EU and Chinese markets. The Cambodia Rice Federation is actively encouraging investment in high‑capacity milling and polishing lines that can meet strict international quality standards.

Rubber Downstream Expansion

The tyre manufacturing sector is absorbing increasing volumes of locally processed rubber. Factories in Svay Rieng (operated by Chinese investors) and Sihanoukville are already buying significant quantities of natural rubber. There is also nascent investment in rubber glove manufacturing – a high‑value product with strong global demand – though this remains a gap waiting for first‑mover investors.

Fruit Processing (Mango, Banana, Longan)

Cambodia has concluded export agreements for dried mangoes and dried cashew nuts with Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. This has spurred interest in fruit drying facilities, which can be much smaller in scale than grain mills, making them accessible to medium‑sized investors. Bananas are already exported fresh, but processing into banana chips or puree remains underdeveloped.

Investment Opportunities by Sub‑Sector

Sector

Opportunity Type

Why Now?

Cashew processing

Milling, grading, roasting, packaging

National policy targets 25% local processing by 2027; most raw nuts are currently exported to Vietnam.

Rice milling & polishing

High‑capacity mills, organic certifications

Growing demand for Phka Romduol in EU and China; need for consistent quality and food safety standards.

Rubber downstream

Tyres, rubber gloves, moulded products

New tyre factories already operating; medical rubber products have strong export potential.

Fruit drying & processing

Dried mangoes, banana chips, fruit purees

Export agreements already in place; relatively low capital entry compared to grain mills.

Cassava (starch) processing

Cassava flour, starch, ethanol

Large volumes available; existing processing plants in Kampong Cham and Battambang are selling to Thailand and Vietnam.

Packaging & logistics

Food‑grade packaging, cold storage, warehousing

Processing boom will drive demand for modern packaging and supply chain services.

Challenges & Risk Mitigation

Challenge

Impact

Mitigation

High energy costs

Processing requires substantial electricity; Cambodia’s industrial tariffs remain higher than some neighbours.

Invest in solar rooftop systems (30 MW quota available); seek SEZ locations with stable power and potential incentives.

Logistics bottlenecks

Poor road connectivity in some provinces; delayed port handling.

Locate near main roads or SEZs; partner with logistics operators. The Funan Techo Canal (under construction) will eventually reduce freight costs.

Supply seasonality

Raw material availability concentrated in harvest months.

Build storage facilities; diversify sources across multiple provinces; consider contract farming to ensure year‑round supply.

Quality certification

Export markets require GlobalGAP, organic, or BRC certification.

Budget for certification costs; government and development partners offer technical assistance programmes.

Competition from Vietnam & Thailand

Established processors with lower costs and better infrastructure.

Focus on niche high‑value products (organic, fair trade, single‑origin); leverage Cambodia’s trade agreements (RCEP, Cambodia‑China FTA).

Market Outlook & Investor Takeaways

The global trend toward traceable, sustainably sourced food products favours countries like Cambodia that can offer identity‑preserved raw materials and processing transparency.

RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) and bilateral FTAs with China and South Korea provide preferential tariff access for processed agricultural products, making Cambodian factories competitive.

First‑mover advantage is significant: early investors in cashew processing, fruit drying, or rubber downstream will capture market share before competition intensifies.

ESG‑focused investors will find Cambodia’s agro‑processing sector attractive because it reduces food miles, creates rural employment, and promotes sustainable farming practices.

BATTAMBANG — Cambodia officially inaugurated a major water supply system in Battambang province on Thursday, marking a significant leap toward universal access to clean water through a rare three-way international financing partnership involving the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the French Development Agency (AFD), and the European Union (EU).

The new facility, located in Sangkat Wat Kor, Battambang city, was inaugurated by Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation H.E. Hem Vanndy, together with Battambang Provincial Governor H.E. Sok Lou, ADB Country Director Yasmin Siddiqi, and AFD Country Director Sandrine Boucher.

$119 Million Collaboration

Governor H.E. Sok Lou confirmed that the project required a total investment of US$119.17 million, funded through:

Loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the French Development Agency (AFD)

Grants from the European Union (EU)

Counterpart funding from the Royal Government of Cambodia

The financing structure reflects a growing trend of multilateral and bilateral donors coordinating with Cambodia to address critical water security challenges.

Key Infrastructure Numbers

The newly completed system includes:

Component

Capacity / Extent

Raw water pumping station

55,000 m³ per day

Water treatment plant

50,000 m³ per day

Main distribution piping

94 km

Total network length

926 km

With the integration of the new plant, Battambang province’s total production and distribution capacity has risen to 83,520 cubic metres per day – enough to serve approximately 219,810 households, or 94% of the target area.

Notably, the system reports a low water loss rate of just 8.45%, well below the industry average for many developing economies, indicating high operational efficiency.

Minister’s Remarks

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister H.E. Hem Vanndy described the Provincial Water Supply and Sanitation Project as “vital for meeting the growing demand in Battambang.” He expressed deep gratitude to ADB and AFD for their continued financial and technical support, adding that he looks forward to further cooperation on future projects to improve the livelihoods of the Cambodian people.

Strategic Importance

Battambang is Cambodia’s second‑largest province by population and a key agricultural and industrial hub. Reliable clean water access supports public health, reduces water‑borne diseases, and strengthens the province’s resilience against droughts – a growing concern under climate change.

The project also aligns with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s national target of achieving universal access to improved water supply by 2030, as outlined in the Country Partnership Strategy with development partners.

Quick Facts

Item

Detail

Total cost

$119.17 million

Financing partners

ADB, AFD, EU, Royal Government of Cambodia

New treatment capacity

50,000 m³/day

Households served

~219,810

Coverage rate

94%

Water loss rate

8.45% (low by regional standards)
